Hey guys, Recently I've decided to try introducing my girlfriend to video games. Usually whenever I start a conversation about them, she just giggles in an "Oh that's cute" kind of way. I would just like to give her a chance to experience the appeal of video games. If she doesn't like them, so be it. My question is this: Which game should I introduce to her that would be both accessible to an inexperienced player, yet in-depth enough to be engaging?
I'm not talking about games like Nintendogs or Wii Sports Resort. I'm looking for a game that can be beaten, or has some sort of ultimate goal. The only game I can think of at the moment would have to be Kirby Super Star Ultra. However, I'm not exactly sure that it would be a good introduction to video games as a whole.
So, do you guys have any suggestions? It can be any genre. I just need some ideas before I try this out. You can take a look at what games I currently have in my backloggery (sig). Thanks!
Kirby's Adventure or Kirby Super Star [the VC or DS version]. Both games are easy to get into for new gamers but both games have a lot of depth. If not either of those, Yoshi's Island would be a good third choice.

you might try getting her hooked on some arcade games (Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, etc.) or some easy platformers (stuff like the SMB series, the Kirby series, The Legendary Starfy, etc. and so forth). you could also try having her play some puzzlers, see if she's into those or something. you never know what someone will wind up latching onto -- if she expresses an interest in any of the more involved games you've got, let her take a crack at 'em on Easy.
and for the love of all that's holy, don't stand over her shoulder telling her what to do. Let her learn on her own and only help if she asks you for help. D:

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I think it would be a good idea to guide her through New Super Mario Bros. Wii with co-op.
To be clear, though, I don't want to introduce games that are just supposed to be time wasters (Farmville, I'm looking at you >.>). Thus, I don't really want to show her many PopCap-esque just yet. I realize that they're fun, simple, and addicting, but I'd like for her to be introduced to more mainstream stuff.
I'm planning on lending a game to her to play on her own time.
oh hell no, that's potentially even worse (for you!)-- don't lend her something you wouldn't mind never seeing again. buy a second copy of it if you have to, but never lend games to girlfriends/boyfriends and expect to get them back in pristine condition. god forbid you break up while she's still got it and she refuses to give it back D:

I'm with SMZ. I've not played Kirby's Epic Yarn yet, myself, but it's the number one game i want to get and play with my girlfriend so she'll get a bit more of an enjoyment of my hobby. it's the absolute most adorable thing i've ever seen, and you can't die, so it seems like an obvious choice.
Mario Kart or any Kirby game would be good ones to go with, I think. Possibly New Super Mario Bros. as well, but I know some people who aren't used to games and they can't seem to 'get' platforming games.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
My mom wasn't a gamer either, but she likes Dr. Mario, Tetris and Zoo Keeper. We always play Dr. Mario on the Wii and she really enjoys it. I then tried to introduce her to Mario Kart. The SNES controls were just a bit to difficult for her to grasp. But she really likes the Wii version.
So I think you should try to look into games that you both can enjoy at the same time and if she doesn't like a genre, don't force her to play it. A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine came by and we spend most of the time playing Mario Strikers Charged Football, Driift Mania and Sonic & Sega: All-Stars Racing. I tried to play a few levels of New Super Mario Bros., but it was clear after a few minutes that he wasn't into it at all. So we switched back to the other three games.
So just see what kind of things she like, look for the games that have offline multiplayer and just have fun together.
BTW, I don't understand why you dismissed Wii Sports Resort. That might be a good game to get her going and then move on from there.

Hand her a controller and make play it for a little while; doesn`t matter what game. Try it with a few games. She won`t know what she likes and you don`t know either so there is no point in guessing.
