We are soon launching a new crossword game with an UI that includes a portrait (TATE) mode and even works without controllers. If you like word games, this one could be quite a fun one to try: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-sof...
I would like to offer you a download code (US, Europe or Australia) – your feedback on the game and UI would be greatly appreciated! Our team put some hard work into it and we really want to make things perfect. In docked, landscape and especially TATE mode. We have not yet seen any other Switch game offering a comparable, continuous landscape experience. Keen to find out how we are doing. We do similar games for mobile devices, but may have overlooked some obvious mistakes during adaption.
If interested, please message me and let me know which region code you need. Thanks! Thorsten
EDIT: Please email me at [email protected] for a code, I can't see a message option in this forum. Thanks!
Is there a way to view the entire puzzle? it looks a bit cramped based on the screenshots. Maybe having a "single line" keyboard option for landscape mode would help increase the view area in that orientation.
The options to have tate mode, touchscreen support, and not requiring any controllers connected sound great! More "pen and paper" game devs could learn from you.
@Eel thanks so much for your feedback. You can zoom out until you see the entire puzzle. I am happy to send you an eShop code so you can try it out right away! You're US region, correct? Please email me at [email protected] for a code.
Would be great to get your opinion after playing for a bit!
I'll try it out on my regular Switch and my Lite as well.
Edit: here's a few initial points:
The software icon doesn't really mesh well with the usual Switch software icons. Maybe it could be a little bit less monochromatic and/or include the name of the game?
Right now it seems the game will only ever take you to the current puzzle it wants you to play in each category, you can't return to previously done ones, or retry ones you skipped. I think it would be nice to have a grid of puzzles to let the player pick and choose which one to play? It could still only record progress for one at a time.
It would be nice to be able to play in TATE mode in either orientation (right now it's limited to one, with the charger on the left side, and the volume buttons on the right). Perhaps it could listen to the gyro sensor to determine what orientation to use?
It could be nice to have the option to disable buttons when in TATE mode, for Switch Lite users since they can be easy to press when using the touchscreen there.
When using the touch screen, it's not possible to move and zoom at the same time (imagine trying to zoom into a specific spot of the puzzle)
Same thing happens with buttons, both actions are mutually exclusive.
Sometimes it can take multiple taps to place the cursor when using the touchscreen (the game might be thinking you're trying to swipe instead of tap).
When using the controller, the camera pans a little bit too slowly and the grid cursor can easily out speed it and end out of view, the camera then very slowly pans to it. It would be nice if the camera could be snappier when moving the grid cursor.
After solving a word, the cursor will automatically set itself on the next word available, and so the camera can take a long time to find it if it's too far away. (It might be nice to be able to disable that automatic movement btw)
The keyboard is a bit cumbersome to navigate with the dpad/stick due to it's alternating arrangement. I'm not sure how viable it would it be but perhaps it could be worth experimenting with a simpler more condensed grid as an option for when playing with a controller?
Bonus idea: Clicking the left and right joysticks could be nice alternate ways to input characters and changing word direction respectively.
The game plays really well using the switch tablet alone in TATE mode, without controllers attached! Using the buttons though, the slow camera and odd keyboard make it a bit harder to enjoy.
As the developer we would also like to thank @Eel for the valuable feedback and suggestions to improve.
We got a more via Reddit and in summary, asking interested players has been an amazing experience for us. We will definitively use this forum again in the future. Since there is no article to be found in NintendoLife, this one was just released a few days ago: https://purenintendo.com/review-pure-crosswords-nintendo-switch/
