I don't know if this has been suggested or not because I didn't feel like looking through the forums but is the ability to PM other members in the works? It would be nice to be able to PM a friend without leaving the site.
You can email users on movemodo, apparently some of its features will be brought to nl so it may happen yet, though you would have to leave the site so not exactly a pm system but close, you could also try nl chat in the meantime.
When the forums are upgraded to be like Movemodo's, users will have the ability to set up their profiles to allow form e-mails, which will be sent to the e-mail address connected to your account. Until then, unfortunately, there is no PM option here at NL. a lot of us just use Backloggery to PM one another :3

I don't want to be E-mail like Crazy by every NL user here.
I will really go Mad.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
@JumpMad: you can choose to just display your e-mail address (and not allow form e-mails), to just allow form e-mails (and not display your e-mail address), or to not display your e-mail address and not allow form e-mails. iirc, it's set to the latter by default.

I don't think PMing is a good idea on a site like this. There are users that get hostile over other user's comments and there are people who protect us from being abused too much and that wouldn't exist with PM unless you have a block option.
Were we to implement private messaging - and I'm not saying we will, but we might - we'd certainly be cautious over users' privacy and safety, so we'd want to put in features like blocking and reporting too. But, like I said, I don't know if we will use private messaging, so don't take this as fact
PM is a good option, but I think that on a community like this where a large proportion of users are quite young it may not be a good idea. It's really up to the staff to figure out, and there is good reason to choose either way.
