Topic: Locked threads

Why are so many threads locked? Someone brings something up then they are told to post it somewhere else. Is it not easier to find what you're looking for in a specific topic rather than another thread with hundreds of replies and is largely more generalized? Everything has to be in one junk folder.

Get the replies in before this is locked.

Because it's easier to have one thread of people wanting to trade Pokemon than one thousand threads of people wanting to trade (trading pokemon is used as an example)

I've seen threads locked out that were more specific to a topic and they get shut down. They're redirected to The Nintendo Switch Thread that is already in the Nintendo Switch forum. It hasn't been anything I've posted. Yet. But I read a thread I'd like to chime in on and can't because it's closed. When you go into a thread with dozens of pages and hundreds of replies to quoted replies and more off topic chatter, it's hard to sift through.

@Meowpheel is it something you've noticed? I haven't been here long. But find it hard to get involved when it seems like mods moderate things just because.

Shaneoh pretty much says it, we don't need ten bazillion threads on the same game.

I can agree and disagree on it I suppose. I saw one about a rumor of upcoming features that may be coming. I just don't see the point of closing it and telling the person to post it somewhere where it will likely get overlooked.

@Dan0753 The thing with rumours is that so many of them exist. Especially leading up to big events like a Direct or in this case E3. Either we can make a dozen threads for every rumour that may or may not be true, or we just direct them to the Switch thread, where people already talk about those rumours anyway.

On top of that, we already have at least a handful of threads about Directs and E3 in general. And I believe one about what to expect for the Switch this year too.

@Dan0753 That thread you're referring to was discussing rumoured features that would be integral to the Switch operating system. Therefore, if there's any meat to the rumour, it would likely get discussed in the main Switch thread too (which has always been the primary Switch speculation/rumour thread), which is exactly what we want to avoid - duplicate conversations across threads, because it makes for an irritating experience for those browsing or wanting to chime in - "Which thread do I post in? I know, I'll post in both..." etc.

As and when additional Switch OS features are revealed, we'll be more than happy to have specific threads to discuss them individually e.g. one for a browser, one for Netflix, one for Youtube etc.

But if it's a Switch rumour or speculative post, it goes in the main Switch thread.

Thanks

the problem with pointing people at an existing thread can be that they are either to generic or just huge.

The Generic switch thread has 13,859 replies and counting, whats wrong with a rumour specific thread? or even a single thread for each big rumour?

@mav-i-am I don't really get why the size of the thread is an issue - there's no requirement to read every post before you submit a new one. And personally, I like the idea of a single thread that presents a chronology of the entire general discussion about that topic over the course of its relevant period.

We have an active thread where rumours specific to the Switch are discussed. This has been the way we've managed it since the 'NX' days (consistently shutting down other Switch speculation/rumour threads that sprung up). Having another one presents the duplication issue.

If it's a game rumour, then by all means start a thread specific to that game, which can turn into the official thread for the game once the rumour is realised.

If you wish to start a discussion, having it swallowed up in a Meta thread is not the best thing.

@mav-i-am I appreciate that, but this is not a chat room lobby, it's a moderated forum. To make the moderation work manageable for the volunteer moderators, and to try and keep it a good place for people to come and read the discussions of others, we need to maintain some order. We love the forums being lively, but we need them to stay organised. Fragmented or duplicated discussions about the same topic don't make for a good user experience.

We all probably get tempted to start new threads when an idea occurs to us that we want to get a good chat going on, but as forum users we all share a responsibility to make an effort to adhere to the forum structure.

Also, I think as moderators we have a responsibility to provide some form of editorial oversight for the benefit of the community. I don't think many people want the forums to start filling with 'rumour' threads anyway, because getting too invested in rumours is really nonsensical.

I don't like locking threads - I get bummed out if I start a thread in a forum and it gets locked. I do it if I think it's contributing to making the forums work better. And every post I've made in this thread, I've reviewed my original decision to lock that other thread, and I still think it was the appropriate decision.

If other mods disagree I'm happy for them to overturn that decision - I've re-opened threads others have locked in the past.

It seems a bit odd that we're discussing this so much and yet no-one has been interested enough in that specific Switch rumour to post it in the Switch thread yet. I should be working, but here I am voluntarily taking time to explain why I politely asked for a discussion to move threads, and yet no-one has been bothered to carry-on that discussion (it's not like I said the discussion wasn't allowed). I think that means I should get back to work

That's exactly what I'm talking about. They mention being organized to help the user experience. There's not much organization if you just toss everything semi related to the same topic in there. Might as well have one thread strictly for "Games" where you can talk about every game out for the Switch. They're all games so no need to have a title specific thread.

Probably because with over 13,000 replies it's not going to get the attention a fresh thread would that is titled for the new topic.

Do you keep one folder on your computer for photos that accumulate over the years? Or are there sub folders that break down the event or date they took place? I don't know why it seems so hard to understand that there is more organization to something when it's broken down a little more instead of a huge miscellaneous catch all.

That's not a very good analogy for here. Old photos are interesting, but old posts are not. I doubt many people look back further than the last couple of pages of a thread.

People are mostly only going to read the last 20 or 40 replies in a 13,000 reply thread, so I don't see why the size is important.

So in each of those event/date folders, do you then have sub-folders for each person or other photo subject? Do you have separate sub-folders each for 'Bob smiling', 'Bob blowing out candles', 'Bob getting caught licking the cake', 'Bob & Jenny', 'Bob, Jenny & Sam', 'Jenny & Sam'? I suspect not. I suspect somewhere you've found a balance between breaking things down into groups and leaving things in groups. Separating everything out completely doesn't make things any more manageable. It just makes it harder to keep track of what should go where.

As I've already said, as and when those OS features become a real thing, they can have their own threads, but while we're at the stage of 'rumour posted by an occasional gaming blog' it can go in the Switch rumour thread.

Forums are social, communal places. Breaking off to start your own conversation just to ensure your idea gets the attention you want it to, rather than making an attempt to integrate with an existing conversation, isn't very social.

We can obviously argue back and forth about it and never agree. It seems pointless you close a thread because you feel it should be placed somewhere else. But yet it still exists to be read up to the point you felt it needed tossed somewhere else. How is that social? You can't carry on the same conversation somewhere else as you started off with.
