I was wondering to know if I could start playing Black & White today and not get any story line confused. Or do I have to play the first Pokemon game first? Thanks.
Each game has their own story line, so no need to play the first. I would recommend playing Heart Gold or Soulsilver first or Black and White. But if you have a GBA or a DS lite, you should get Fire Red or Leaf Green (If you can find it for cheap of course).
Nope there will only be minor hints of past games, that might be a little confusing but you can always use the internet for info.

Each game's storyline is completely separated from the other games' storylines (asides a few minor references), so there's no order at all you need to play them in, and you won't miss anything important if you skip games in the series. I'd recommend HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black or White as your first version. You get more for your money in HG/SS (they're huge, spanning two whole regions rather than one and packed with content), but B/W introduce features that make life easier. Personally, I'd recommend HG/SS. B/W are great but they're screaming out for the inevitable extra content of 'Grey' - every main series Pokémon pair that's not a remake is followed a year or two later by a third enhanced version, and it's almost certain the same will apply for B/W.
I started playing pokemon before I even knew English. XD Its easy to learn but of course hard to master. If your familiar with RPG's pokemon is not that different. Every Region has its own story. I say go for it. Your not missing much from not playing previous versions.
Go with Black or White. In my opinion, they are the best games in the series. As mentioned before, each game has an independent storyline. In fact, all of them are very similar, only Black and White mix things up a bit. HeartGold and SoulSilver are fantastic choices, too.
I just got SoulSilver two weeks ago and have played for about 60 hours now I think - it's one of the most fun games I've played in a long time and even though I thought too that it might be confusing, it's really not. I can't compare it to other Pokemon games since this is the first one I've ever had, but if you like RPGs, you'll probably enjoy it.

I have never started a thread on NL. Maybe I'm scared of dragons and chickens.

You could really start with any Pokemon game in the series. None of them relate to each other (aside from the remakes) and they all do a great job of explaining the basics for first timers. However, you will not enjoy one of the greatest aspects of Black and White, if you start with that game, which is never seeing a Zubat or Tenticool throughout the entire main game.

only pokemon game i haven't played is heartgold/soulsilver and black/white. all the others are easy different storyline but still similar in many way, so start with anyone u want you won't regret it
Pokémon HG/SS is a remake of, in my opnion, the best Pokémon game so far (and one of the best PKMN stories too ). You can't go wrong with it! If you prefer something a bit different try black and White. They have the essence of the classic Pokémon but "upgrated" to nowadays.

Black/White is the best one to start with. It has all-new Pokemon so everyone starts off on the same page, and have the easiest to understand of all the interfaces.

Completely agree. Don't start on diamond pearl and platinum, nothing much new there
@Alex: I don't think someone new to pokemon cares if one of the games bring something new to the series or not, considering no matter which they pick everything will be new.
