I know it's early to be calling this (plus, technically it would be the game of last year, but I only started playing it yesterday), and I know that after just a few hours of play things might go really funny later on.
But even considering, Ninokuni is game of the year. I hope it gets a translation, because this is definately the send off the DS needed
And that's why I'll never get it. I never much cared for Ghibli. Outside of some solid animation, IMHO they don't have much else going for them.
Wow, really? I really buy into the "Ghibli is old style Disney philosophy, wrapped up in Japanese themes." I find the films universally beautiful, touching, and intelligent.
I find them nonsensicle, flashy, detatched, and hard to follow. Only ever liked one movie they made, the rest ...weren't for me. And I'll leave it at that.

Ok, you should probably not worry about getting Ninokuni, then
The book is a big barrier for localisation which is a pity.
In fact I've hear in general that the book hampers the experience because it limits the portability. What are your thoughts on that?

Well, yeah, you can't lug this game around very easily. But limiting the experience? No. It enhances the experience by giving you an additional portal to experience the very rich world that Ghibli/ Level 5 has come up with.
It just means it's an experience you'll be having at home. There's always Pokemon, Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy for RPGing on the go.
I would recommend the PS3 version over the DS version, because HD suits this kind of game nicely, and again, the book limits its portability anyway, but either way, you're still going to have a good time.
The book's the best bit! Just slap it in your bag, it can't be THAT heavy... Or just play it at home. The only time I take my DS anywhere is for car journeys.
@kkslider5552000 I remember the dead sound ninja who dressed as a mummy (he was ace, didn't he get eaten by a worm on a roof or something?)
Noone is right or wrong. It's their opinions, studio Ghibli just doesn't appeal to mickeymac and I can see why. Some of their films can be too hard to follow and too nonsensical. Although, I do like some of their films like spirited away which may not have been any less nonsensical but I found it to be more enjoyable than some of their other films. I'm unsure of this game at the moment but I might get it if it comes to the west.
Lol you don't understand them, so they're nonsensical? O-Kay.
Yes, that would be the definition of nonsensical.
===================================
I'm sure it's a great game, but when it's released to the rest of the world (if), I'd probably skip it. While I enjoy the odd Ghibli film when they come on TV (I really need to start collecting them on DVD), I'm not feeling the hype for it at all. Simply, it's a game I can do without.
I'd probably enjoy it moderately if I was to buy it, but I don't feeel it's an essential purchase for me.
I also think I need to start buying less RPGs - broaden my horizons.
