Topic: Help needed on fixing my DS Lite

I've had my DS for about 4 years now. It's hinge broke about a year ago, but I ignored it and continued to play it regularly. However, today the hinge on my DS got completely torn off.
This isn't my DS, but it looks like this: (although the battery light is still attached to mine)

So I was wondering a few things:
1. Can I rip off the top half of my DS and use it as a GBA?
2. Is it a good idea to glue the top half of my DS into a permanent position?
3. Is there any way to replace the top half?

By the way, I don't know if my warranty has expired yet, but I don't want to send it in. I'd rather fix it myself or steal the parts from it to mod stuff

That's what happened to my DS too. The sleep function seems to be the first thing the DS starts up, if you take the top screen off or is pulled too far, it won't turn on again. And gluing it may work. but not suggested. You're better off buying a new DS.

Buy a new one or send it into Nintendo for repair are my suggestions. Unless you know what you are doing fixing it yourself can create more problems.

I've pulled apart several DS Lites for repairs and replacement casings, so here's some advice:

1. Do NOT pull the top half off! The DSL checks that components, including the top screen, are working properly on boot. If the screen is missing you won't be able to use it at all.

2. Gluing the top screen may work, but that obviously affects portability and opens the screens up for damage. Do it if that doesn't bother you.

3. As mentioned, I've replaced the shell on three DS Lites and it's quite doable. That will fix your problem. It's a little fiddly and I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't had much experience dealing with fiddly things and aren't confident with electronics. However, you can buy a replacement case from eBay for about $15 which will include everything you need and completely repair your DSL!

If you go down the route of replacing the case, I'd advise reading some guides and watching some videos. I can provide you with some links if you wish. The most important thing in any case is to watch the ribbon cable on the left-hand hinge which connects the top screen to the motherboard. Damage that and you will have to replace the entire top screen which obviously adds to the cost and gets a bit more fiddly.

Feel free to ask for any tips or advice if you want!

It would be easiest to send it in.

I recently noticed the hinge in my son's Triforce DS is cracked. iirc, he got it for Christmas about 3 years ago. I'll probably be sending it to Nintendo for repair and I hope they have the parts for this particular DS as it was fairly limited. If they don't have any of the gold cases, then I'll probably give him my DSi.

I can't recall if it was Wal Mart, Target, or some other place, but I saw the DS Lites on sale for $89 over the weekend. If you've got the disposable income, maybe a new one would be the way to go.

If briunj04 has the money to buy a brand new one, it can't hurt to try fixing it for $15!
