Topic: Is this the future of amiibo?

Think about it... for us collectors, do you think our amiibo will CRASH like the beanie babies? I manage to find a toad, and he's staying sealed.. but i'm not selling him. Unless he becomes the next holy one (VERY unlikely), I'm keeping him just because i like the box... Same goes with Shulk and Ike. But is this gonna be it?

deja vu... Announcing online which ones will retire, very few early ones... see? are we gonna die out like this?

I like amiibo. that is all!

If they go down in value, then more will be available because scalpers won't buy them. I'm down for that.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Yes I believe they will mostly crash apart from a select few.

I think this is universally true for anyone who goes into collecting things thinking it's an "investment". Particularly things which are mass produced and especially when said things are still being produced. Even with NES/SNES games right now there are only a small handful of titles that are worth more than what the original RRP was. More than what they were worth a few years ago but not at all near the original prices

Just looking on ebay now for what some of the games I still have from when I was a kid are worth. Even the most ambitious sellers are asking for less than what they originally cost. Even the guys who have it complete in-box. And screwing over the collectors even more it's generally the best sellers that are the only ones worth anything at all.

I never understood the beanie baby thing. Where they like super huge in the U.S.?

I mean, I always found them cute (and I do have a turtle horse hybrid beanie baby I found at a second hand shop), but why would anyone want to have many of them?

I was too little at the time, but apparently it was very huge. They were a must-have product. And why?...yeah, I don't know why. And from what I've gathered, figuring that out is one of the holy grails of marketing.

Most of the games I have from my younger years during the GC era are in general being sold at about 3 times the price I bought them for. Assuming the NX is a replacement to Wii U, you could easily buy the NX at launch just by selling FE Path of Radiance.

(Not that I'd do it of course because Path of Radiance is a perfect game)

They were massive - the number of shops that wouldn't sell soft toys otherwise that carried them was what I remember most. I think the quality and the unusual animals and cute names they gave them were what was appealing to collectors. They still exist by the way, but no longer demand as much store space so that's kind of reassuring. I expect the collector market is much smaller, though!

I expect that amiibos will have some kind of niche popularity for some time to come, just like any other Nintendo figurine line. The major difference is the breadth of characters on offer.

I don't think Amiibos will go that bad. It seems pretty clear that most people collecting them are aware they're not going to remain so valuable to the mainstream, and the scalpers are almost certainly aware that selling now as opposed to later is a must.

Yeah, maybe the Australian price screwing my perspective a bit. But even then most of the used games from retro systems I've seen still go for around what the original RRP was. Back in the mid 90s new games cost upto $100AU easily, $60AU for Gameboy games. If you look around though you'll find them for more around $30-70AU for most titles. Depending on the game and condition. Which is insane compared to what the prices used to be but still nowhere near the original RRP. Anyways, the bigger point was that this sort of stuff is a horrible investment.

It'll no doubt crash but I'm betting there will be a bunch that will remain rare and hold some value. I think what allows these to hold value is just that it's Nintendo and the third party ones are unusual as well. The only way this can go in the toilet is if they mass produce every single one and they all become abundant or they never utilize them properly as time goes on. Just leaving them as things you tap to the gamepad for a small extra feature probably won't keep this ship sailing forever.
It's been said so much already but at least if the whole Amiibo thing came to a screeching halt then the figures are pretty decent imo and they're cool just for display when their lifespan is up.
Think about the future too, if we're lucky, and chances are we will be, they'll just have this NFC stuff going on for a really long time and this will carry on past the WiiU & 3DS onto the NX. $13 retail price Amiibo lasts you 10 years worth of games? Pretty good no?
Of course that's if it works out properly.

They're definitely not going to be as valuable as they are now in a few years. To me, they're a fad. Pokemon cards were the same way about a decade ago. I don't think they'll go the route of beanie babies because Nintendo characters are timeless and have been around for a long time.

That being said, I still have about 3 or 4 that I have doubles of so I can keep them boxed up. The other 13 or 14 though I just open them and throw the box out and just have them by my TV to display because I like the way they look.
