A SD card is a type of outside storage that the 3DS and other electronics use. It's similar to how a flash drive or thumb drive works for computers. On the 3DS, some games, data for those games, and applications like the video and camera apps will store their data on the SD card and not the system's small internal memory.
Most 2DS and 3DS systems come with a small capacity SD card, but it seems like your system either does not have one or else can't read your SD card correctly. The 2DS and 3DS can support SD cards up to 32 Gigabytes (GB), but nothing bigger than that.
I would like to know which 2DS or 3DS system you have. Most of them can use a normal size SD card. The slot can be found on the outside of the system and normally has a cover that protects the slot. The only exceptions are the New Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL, which only use a micro SD card (a really small SD card). I'll tell you more about the them if one of them is the system you have.
All SD card sizes that the 2DS and 3DS support are relatively cheap. I can't easily recommend a size as I don't know what you plan to do with your system. When/if you get one, however, you or an adult need to follow the instructions in this link to format the SD card before using it in your system.
Try looking up Amazon, that's where I got my SD card. Also, depending on what model 3DS you have, you may need either an SD or microSD card. (The New 3DS systems has colored buttons and a C stick.) Click here to see.
If you're not comfortable with or able to shop online, plenty of retail stores like Walmart, Target, cell phone stores, or pretty much any store that sells phones, computers, or tablets will have them in an area of the electronics section.
As mentioned above, it is important to know which model of 2DS or 3DS that you have as that may influence the size of SD card that you need.
