I need some help. My 3ds is almost completely full and I need to upgrade the SD card. Is there anything I need to know, and how do I transfer my data and 3 downloaded games? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I understand this is a forum, but most of the time you can find your answer with a simple Google search....

Well, if you want to stay first party, then Nintendo offers 8 GB and 16 GB SD Cards. Basically, any SD card will work up to 2 GB, and any SDHC card from 4 GB to 32 GB will work, but Nintendo verifies these cards. http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_...
Personally, I use a SanDisk Extreme 32 GB Class 10 SDHC card. It works fine for me.

I use a Micro SDHC card with an adapter, both of an unknown random brand(EMTEC, never heard of it), it was super cheap
lagged at the first use but as soon as I redownloaded some games(had to delete to download MH3U in the old SD card) it got normal(weird stuff)

I bought a 16GB one to transfer my stuff from Wii to Wii U and when I was done I slapped it in my 3DS and it's worked great ever since. If you're not against online orders here's the link to the actual product I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134617
A good card at a great price, and Newegg offers free (albeit slow) shipping to further increase the savings if you want Hope that helps.
When I first tried to transfer my files from the smaller card to the large, my PC wouldn't read the card saying it needed to be formatted.
To fix this, after hours of searching, I realised all I needed to do was apply the read-only lock on the card, then undo it, and suddenly the content of the card was read by my PC and copied onto the newer card.
Once the card had initially been read by the 3DS it all worked fine.
Despite what I said though, Do not buy any card made by PNY, or any product from them. They're pieces of crap.
I have a PNY. It works fine. I agree that a SanDisk card would be better. Basically, every 16 or 32GB card you can buy is guaranteed to be better than what was out, even just 2 years ago.
EDIT: In otherwords, it would be pretty hard to buy a crappy SD card, considering they improve them all the time, and the ones before were fine.
I have the same question. I was complaining about the stupid 2GB card our 3DS came with and mine is running out of space. My wife went and bought me a Micro SDHC 8GB Panasonic card.
My question is, will my 3DS lag? I know the adapter is basically a data transfer bus, but still I'm skeptical

I'm not sure what kind of threshhold there is for lag issues. I've always used SanDisk cards, which are pretty rad, so maybe that's why I've never had a problem with it. But for what it's worth, I'm using a card with huge capacity and I noticed absolutely no difference in transfer speeds from my previous card with smaller capacity. I think it depends more on the brand and quality of the card rather than the actual storage size of it.
If concerned, I would say the best remedy would be to stick with a brand that you know you can trust.
Pretty much any current line 16gb or 32gb card will be compatible with the 3DS. If you venture higher than that, it may have issues. However, there are tricks you can do to get around that, usually involving reformatting. You can find guides for doing that around the interwebs.
As for data transfer, you can do that on a PC with an SD card slot. It's pretty straight forward.
1. Insert the new card in your 3DS and let it format.
2. Insert the old card in your PC and copy the files there.
3. Take it out and insert the new card in your PC and copy the files onto there.
All done, unless I'm getting old and forgetting something important...

@Caviarmeths
I think the transfer speed is how you tell which card will read faster(mine is 20mb/s, which was one of the fastest when I got it). I'm not really sure how fast the 3DS reads this data, but there probably isn't much of a difference over a certain read speed.
@Hy8ogen I dismounted one of those adapters once, they're just "wires"(kinda, more like circuit trails but with no special components, just conductive metal) no humanly noticeable lag should happen. it's exactly the same as using a longer cable to connect a home console to the TV but even less significant.
and at least on my micro SDHC card no lag happens compared to a normal sized SD/SDHC card.
