I really wasn't a fan of the smartphone versions of this game and the tilt nonsense, but after hearing all the good reviews about this using physical controls on the 3DS, I'm definitely looking forward to giving this version a go!
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
I gave it a try and I was pretty underwhelmed, unimpressed.
The controls work fine and all but the game is not very immersive or engaging, as you zip past all of the obstacles, the only thing keeping you from total silence is a single monotonous audio-track that plays across the entire game, and the occasional crash or warning.
As you slide around the tunnel, tube or plane and pass by obstacles narrowly, there's little in the way of feedback to give me the sensation that I've actually been moving outside of the visuals. The 3D effect is pretty nice but the actual graphics, simple sure, effective, not really.
Somehow the speed doesn't really grab hold of me, sure you're going fast but I'm not really feeling it, somehow. A big contributing factor to this would be the low-frame rate, for sure.
This is in stark contrast to something like Speedthru: Potzol's Puzzles, which requires quick reflexes and responses to multiple walls you need to squeeze through, and can even reward you for assuming the best possible position or filling in the outline of the hole of the wall before passing through it.
What's more is Potzol's Puzzles visuals, however simple, are very well designed and the audio complements the visual theme grandly, with each of your actions and movements, passing through walls, successes and failures all responding with some nice sounds.
THIS is an engaging and immersive experience, this actually captures that haphazard chaotic action of rushing through dangerous obstacles.
Of course, Potzol's Puzzles is a somewhat pricier title compared to the cheap SpeedX, so let me talk about an even cheaper title, Aura-aura Climber for DSiWare.
At just £1.80, I got well over 8 hours of accomplishment hunting fun by fulfilling goals and going for all S-ranks. Both score-attack and endless modes, through only with limited levels, give you so much to do in an effort in fully exploring a level and avoiding mistakes.
The visuals, though simple were all very effective, all sorts of tokens and power-ups are very distinct, enemies are easy to identify with the many kinds of grapple points to latch onto and all behave differently.
My point is that SpeedX is of a shockingly dull standard for a dedicated handheld gaming system. Maybe this monotony will pass on a smart phone, but this can hardly be considered a compelling gaming experience where there is so little feedback from the game, only when you crash or spend a few minutes not crashing does the game actually produce some sort of sensation.
I feel like I was playing some very early Playstation game from a demo disc or something, or maybe, heaven forbid, a homebrew game.
The fact that Nintendo Life awarded SpeedX an 8/10 is disappointing, compared to the likes of Potzol's Puzzles and Aura-Aura Climber which were awarded an 8/10 and 9/10 respectively.

I downloaded this game onto my Android phone for free two days ago.
I just uninstalled it. It quickly became tedious and boring.
The 3D in SpeedX is really impressive on my phone, considering my phone doesn't have stereoscopic 3D visuals like the 3DS. But that's about it as far as things that impress.

Arent you the one that spends hours on Bird Mania 3D?
I have the Android version. It's actually fun, not as bad as the reviews say, but NOT worth 3 dollars. I'd be reluctant to pay 99 cents for this game, and it's honestly got the qualities of a 6 or really low 7.

Screw you.

well heres the improvements of the 3ds version:
-more game modes (3ds has 4 while android has 1)
-better graphics
-better controls/more controls
well your not gonna get anything from the eshop that is 99 cents but it is a good deal.

There's 3 modes on Android. And I have a hard time justifying 3 dollars for another mode in a fairly mediocre game
The graphics are WORSE on the 3DS actually. The stereoscopic 3D might help, but it honestly looks rather primitive from the start.
I thought the tilt controls worked fine as is. And I'm not sure how well the circle pad would work considering the quickness occasionally needed (Think Bit. Trip BEAT here.)

Just got it, the previews looked amazing, heard both good and bad reviews so far but I will probably like this more than my impressions of Vector Racing (which I didn't buy.) We'll see pretty soon, though!
