@Morpheel: are you going to enter the contest? I'm going to work my Arse off over the next couple of months to try and at least get out a ninja themed game

Still playing 3DS but will have Switch soon for multiplayer with friends. I miss you guys! Adam, Joni, Gavin and the rest of the Blue Rogues from the Phantasy Star Zero Days.

Probably not. If only the theme was farming or simulator.

Look at the contest. There are two other themes as well. One for applications and another that's open for anything. I plan to compete in the open theme, as I don't like my creative freedom to be limited by a theme.

Was thinking about buying this and then I remembered...I'm in college because I want to design games in the future. Messing with BASIC can only help, right??

So now I have it and I'll poke around with it. I'm excited now...!

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

I'm on YouTube.

I promise to not derail threads. Request from theblackdragon

Oh well then. If my game is done before the deadline, I'll enter it.

Bloop.

Someone was able to remake Mega Man 2 on the original Petit Computer, right?

Wonder if someone will remake ninja Gaiden for this contest.

I remember ^.^ Glad to see you again. Hopefully our entire old community can get back together and make some amazing games. Once I finish my college applications, I'll be sure to make a few of my own.

@Patriplexity: The program sharing thread got moved to the online gaming sub forum. I also just bumped it so it should be near the top of the all forums list. I posted some of my favorite programs so far, so take a look, and feel free to share your own favorites!

I like makin' games!
Future Pinball games!
Petit Computer games!!
and SmileBASIC games!
Waiting for Kirby Air Ride 2. One day, it will come. One day...

Is this worth the 10 Dollars & how much is the Upgrade or what ever it's called?

@Robo-Knight
Totally worth the 10 dollars in my opinion, but I love figuring things out and trying to make stuff work.

Being able to download games instead of sharing QR codes makes it easier to try out the stuff others have created, so it's nice for people who like playing homebrew-type games too. Just don't expect to be playing professional quality stuff all the time, because it's mostly coded by amateurs.

If you don't want to learn about programming, or play games created by amateur coders, then $10 will probably feel pretty steep.

Right now the upgrade is only useful if you want more server space to upload programs you've created. Prices vary, but it's certainly not necessary for most people. (I've read that there are other upgrades planned though - stuff like improved sound/music editing tools. Not sure what pricing will be like or when that will arrive though.)

How are people finding SmileBASIC? I know there are a bunch of Petit Computer veterans looking at it - have you found the improvements are worthwhile?

Although I haven't spent very much time with the program yet, but am generally impressed at the improvements. There are some nice new features included - little things like user-defined functions that go a long way to improving the code - and the in-interface help is a huge boon for forgetful people like myself. The one big question I have is working with the new Smile Tool to create assets. Not saying it's bad, I just haven't jumped in yet so the whole thing is still a question mark for me.

No code to share yet, but I'm happily working away and hoping to put together something for the big competition. (That probably won't happen... but it never hurts to aim big, right?)

I'm liking the improvements. The only thing I do not like is the inability to share files other than over the internet - you can only share 10 levels at a time without a monthly subscription. Also, with PTC you had the ability to make sprites on a computer and import them via QR codes, you can't do that here.

Everybody do a chirp. CHIRP.

Cool. Thanks for the responses, everyone.

This page alone has some of the most amazing downloads for SmileBasic I've seen yet and I thought might be a reason for you to get the program. Anyway take a look no pictures are posted but the best games so far other than the 5 games which come with it are on this page. Oh don't get me wrong these are not professional games but they are neat. Most of them are play in short burst type of games

@Pixelrobin Actually, there are a few different programs that allow you to transfer text files and images via audio. Some require the proper cables, others can work with regular headphones. I managed to get all the code for one if PTC games into SmileBASIC through one of these, for example.

@Windy Hey, sorry for coming around so late. Are you still having trouble with the chat? It looks like you've made a few messages, but does it still only half work? If you're still having trouble, I may be able to find a fix if I know your browser version and whether or not it's mobile.

@randomous: I use UC Browser on my iPAD and also UC Browser on my Android Tablet. Safari works fine though on my iPAD so I just switch to that when I'm in the chatroom.. I haven't really felt like chatting the past few days. Just not much to contribute. Plus I'm getting very frustrated with SmileBasic. I have done nothing for the past 4 days but play with Smile basic and I still can't Load a background in my program. I have done any and all tutorials I can find for it. I may go back to Petit computer since there are so many tutorials out there for it. Then when SmileBasic starts to get some serious help files and tutorials I will jump on it later. I am having fun getting stuff other people are doing though.

Rather than using background files, I used data statements. I translated everything I wanted to make into data statements and drew my backgrounds that way. It's more useful that way, as I've already thought of a collision detection system possible due to how I draw my backgrounnds. You should try it ^.^ I can show you my code tonight if you'd like.
