Topic: Should Nintendo's next handheld have 3D?

3D is essential for the next Nintendo handheld.

Just look at whats going on in gaming at the moment.

Oculus Rift - The next 3D head mounted display sensation.

Nintendo 3DS - Blockbuster handheld with all the existing 3D development work done and a massive competitive advantage

Moores Law - Means 3D computer graphics is becoming easier to implement with lower energy consumption and more graphics power between console generations. Going from 30 fps to 60 fps is equivalent to one Moores law half life, of about two years.

Nintendo just need to improve the 3D sweet spot , perhaps with a better screen technology and head tracking.

Just when you are getting close to a goal. you don't give up.

Pokemon to me was dull and the excuse they made for that not using 3d was awful. The 3d used was also so bad I had to turn mine off as the frame rate was bogged down by it. In the right hands full 3d and 60 fps is not only possible but needs to be required!

I'm not sure if I'm getting Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire if they haven't fixed the presentation a little bit. The 3D and frame-rate were both awful in X and Y.

I literally just sold mine back to Gamestop yesterday and bought my son his first 3ds XL. I really can't play that game again. To me it's a poor man's rpg. I thought I would give the series another go after so many years and seeing as how they updated the graphics finally gave me hope for a much different game. To me the series has not evolved much at all. Just adding Pokemon isn't the answer.

Oculus Rift is Virtual Reality, a far cry from 3D. The idea is that you put it over your eyes and it tricks your body into thinking that (if first person) the game is the real world around you.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

3D is what I want, but this time with a better implementation. My dream Nintendo handheld is a sleeker, more powerful 3DS with better battery life, anyway.

That and call it the 4DS. And release a line of baseball-themed minigames for it.

and allow the player to enter in the games too! XD

My friend, please don't get me started on all those MMOs with VR headsets where you get trapped in the game in the process.

Don't blame me if you want to die because of a Goomba!

oh man, forgot about that!
maybe they should make this feature exclusive to games where nobody can die, that solves the problem

Main feature of the next portable animal crossing, calling it now

I liked the customization options and the Pokemon Stadium-style graphics. It was undoubtedly a fun game. Also, the online gameplay is SO much better than it used to be. But the visual presentation lacked polish and the story wasn't nearly as compelling as Pokemon Black/White, which had actually addressed most of my old complaints about the plots of Pokemon games.

I'll probably end up getting one of the new ones anyway. It's Pokemon.

yeah, as a multiplayer Pokémon game, XY was nothing short of a step forward but it lacked in most other areas.

on a side note, I hope VR fails miserably because if it works the real world will be in trouble.... >.>

Why do you think Nintendo released a 2D console after 3DS? They knew that gamers doesn't want this bull. It's waste of money they realised and it takes a lot of power so games looks actually very weak when you compare it to a N64 console. 3DS should be light years ahead but it has even lower resolution. I'm a bit pissed off that Nintendo is making abuse of it and that's why i stopped buying Nintendo handhelds. It's not acceptable and i'm amazed how many people are supporting it blindly. Please take a good look to the futures of the handheld and @ the time we're in. It's wayyyyyy behind. If they would ask a little price for i would support it but this is just asking for more money for a very weak handheld. Even a simple cheap phone can beat it

For me personally, the 3D feature is of no use, since my eyes had trouble seeing the 3D effect.

But there are people who like the 3D on the 3DS, so I say keep it like it is now.

A switch that allows you to turn off the 3D if you don't want t. There is really no reason to cut out this feature.

Given how the 3D tech in the 3DS is now tried and proven, I could say 3D could be a mainstay for future Nintendo handhelds, although not the main selling point.

sub12

No, get rid of 3D, most importantly it hurts the frame rate when set to max, and also, it's fallen off the pop culture charts after 3D TV's failed to be a worthwhile gimmick, nobody cares.

Like @aj_lethal said I could see the next handheld being strong enough to be able to run 3D and 60 FPS on all games without there having to be a sacrifice (like Ssb4 having the Pokémon and Assist trophies run at lower FPS and Some of the BG characters looking hideous) it could work I would just not want it to be a main selling point that would be like selling the DS for having a colored screen

I could care less if the next handheld has 3D or not, I can't use it because I have stereo blindness. which makes me wonder what the Oculus Rift would be like for me

I feel that people massively overuse the term "gimmick," but there's no doubt in my mind that 3D does not need to return for the next system. It was a cool idea that has somewhat worn out its novelty and tends to get ignored, these days, some games not even including 3D as a feature. It looks beautiful, though, and I wouldn't mind seeing it return. I just don't think it needs to.

The UGXloggery ... really needs an update.

What_Sthat

Every Nintendo handheld I've owned has been a terrific gaming device and I have no doubt that whatever comes next will be good, no matter if there is 3D or not, one screen or two screens, or whatever. I guarantee it'll be great.

Well said! I'll defend the 3ds to my grave. Can't quite figure out why we have to defend it though.

I think iOS wins for many of the classic types of games.

3DS == iOS (Formatting is a mess sorry)

Run n Gun - Dsiware Commando : Steel Disaster == Metal Slug 3
Action RPG - A Link Between Worlds == Secret of Mana
Lego - Loads of them but not the console versions == A Brilliant Version of Lego Star Wars
shmup - Life Force / RECCA == Blazing Star / Raiden Legacy / Arcade R-Type
Shantae - Dsiware awful scaling == Shantae - Dsiware - Perfect version
Steamworld Dig == Bastion
Monster Hunter 3 == Ultimate Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Dunno about this but it supports physical controls).
All Stars Racing Transformed (Terrible version) == All Stars Racing Tranformed (Good version but broken by freemium probably)
Super Mario Bros 3 (Or 3D Classics Sonic 1) == Sonic CD / Sonic / Sonic 2 (Wonderful ports)
Bravely Default (Junk) == Knights of the Old Republic / Final Fantasy III / Final Fantasy IV

(There is loads more on iOS that when it gets the support for the physical controls will make it even better. Super Ghouls n Ghosts (Fixed port) / Megaman X / Gunstar Heroes / Arcade - Ghouls n Ghosts / Super Streetfighter 2 Turbo).

If I could have a better selection more modern VC on the 3DS I might be happier with it. (Or even better indie games like the Vita seems to have).

I don't see why people especially if they have an ipad anyway don't just do it (I think the controller will be less than the amount saved). Nothing is included that doesn't support the iOS physical controls.
