Definitely get a 3DS XL. Not only are there upcoming Pokemon games like you mentioned, but a hell of a lot of other good games to buy or look forward to as well.
No fan of Nintendo handheld consoles should be without a 3DS. None.
Wait until after E3 just to see if they announce a new hardware iteration (which I doubt). Then get one. They're not going to be releasing another totally new system for another five years at least, most likely.

I completely disagree. There are so many great titles I can name off the top of my head right now that I wouldn't know where to start.
The screens on the XL have to be seen to be believed. And I disagree about going with the original if you are looking for something more portable. I will grant that the XL is a tad on the heavy side but thanks to the folding design it is compact and gorgeous. I don't think I've ever been so satisfied with the size of a handheld.
Anyway, I see that you are getting one. I'm sure you will enjoy it, as it has really come into its own this past year.
