I am a HUGE Monster Hunter Fan since MH3U on the WiiU. I put over 200h in it and I am still not bored. It is a really addicting and fun game.
So that you know where I am coming from, I unfortunatly have to Rant and let off some steam. I bought MH4U on ebay for 16€ just to have a Monster Hunter experience on the go and tested the demo before. I thought It was okay but now that I am 10h into MH4U I have to say that it is UNPLAYABLE. I own the normal 3DS XL and the camera controls of that game a beyond AWFUL. I really hate playing the game now and need to force myself to play it because of these camera controls. I am not going to spend 30€ or more to buy a circlepad pro XL or even a new 2DSxl. I just hate playing MH4U.
But this is not even my main issue/rant. My issue is, why did people and reviewer tolerate that MH4U and Generations are exclusive on the 3DS and not on WiiU? I wished back then the game launched rewievers would have said stuff like "Good game, but on wrong console -5/10" or stuff like that to let Capcom know that Monster Hunter simply is not ment to be played on a tiny screen with bad camera controls. Imagine if something like that happend to a big Franchise like CoD for example. If the next main CoD would have been on the 3DS people would have been so angry and made their voices be heard but why not with the Monster Hunter franchise? Why was Mh4U and Generations never released on WiiU aswell? There was no problem with the dual release for MH3U to begin with.
And now that MHXX is on the way, I do not understand why Capcom also releases MHXX on the new 3DS systems, because you can play it on the go with the Switch anyway?
I am really mad that I am "forced" to buy extra addons for my 3ds or even a new console just to enjoy and play the game properly.
I never really had any problems playing it on my 2DS. I just had the touch dpad and used the monster focus button extensively. Since then I upgraded to the new 3DS XL, and to be honest the c nub is pretty useless, my technique didn't change much.
Anyway, it's released on handheld devices because that's what the series sells best on.
The reason XX was sold on the 3DS is simply because it came out on the 3DS before it came out on the Switch.
Use target cam and put the d-pad on the touch screen. I got used to the latter after half an hour and you should've been using the former often in 3U HD anyway.
"There's a very fine line between not listening and not caring. I like to think I walk that line every day of my life." -Leonard Church Jr.
@Tsurii I put the dpad on the touch screen and is is just garbage. Btw stop responding and then I will stop "whining". Wish you a great day Ms./Mr. Weeaboo
@CrazedCavalier I do use it of course, BUT it puts the camera behind my character in a angle wich is to low for me and therefore I am unable to hit properly. I usually have the camera in such and angle abov my character so I can measure distances better. I use the Hammer and most of the time I miss, because I think I am close enough but I am not because the monster target camera puts the camera to low for me.
I played the 4U fully on my 2DS before it broke. The camera system was not perfect or at Mario64 levels of possibilities but it was still perfectly playable (without the touchscreen cross). On n3DS, I first tried exploiting the right rubber thing but it didn't make things more simple and my use of it declined until this useless thing fell into oblivion.
By the way, there is a setting to choose how high above the ground the camera stands.
What @Rei said. There are actually a lot of options for adjusting camera and default camera angle. But it sounds like you aren't using lock on. You can lock on to a monster instead of pushing the camera behind you. It makes the game infinitely more playable. If you are using lock on then, well, too bad?
@Rei There is an option for that??? Let my try that out, maybe it helps me. Thank you for letting me know that!
@EOTW Yeah I use lock-on on big monsters and it is awful in my opinion. Ther is no "to bad". If alot of people think mh4u is unplayable then this is not the fault of the person who plays it, but the developer.
You should read this article maybe : https://www.engadget.com/2015/03/13/monster-hunter-4-ultimate/
The Author explains why the camera sucks very well.
@Joeynator3000 Well maybe you have a point, the controls are not awful (except for the touchscreen method. Not having haptic feedback just sucks.), BUT the Device which I play MH4U is awful, since it is simply not capable of providing a proper Button Layout for people to play and enjoy "hardcore" games like MH and that is why there are so many Grips for the System just to make it more comfortable.
If people alot of people think mh4u is unplayable then this is not the fault of the person who plays it, but the developer.
Except that most people are totally fine with it. You are not the majority here. Actually i think that being able to snap to the monster is better than regular controls. But hey, if you don't like it then you don't like it. Besides, it looks like MHXX is gonna be on Switch, so no worries!
@Rei Thank you! Your tip really helped me. I figured out a decent setting so far. Thanks a bunch! Turns out I was stupid for not checking the options menu carefully.
I adored the digital d-pad in all three 3DS MH titles. That is, until I got a New 3DS. But even now, I'll occasionally reach my right thumb left to the touchscreen instead of up to the C nubbin.
What gaming has taught me most of all over the years is to be open to new control schemes. I started with an NES controller, was impressed by the third button on the Genesis/MegaDrive controller, got blown away by the fourth face button and shoulder buttons on the SNES, and by the time I got a Playstation there were two sticks and two more shoulder buttons. Moving your thumb over to the touchscreen would only be a real issue if you didn't bother resizing and moving the digital d-pad to your liking, or nearly impossible if you're playing on a 2DS.
Essentially; git gud applies here, but not about the game itself so much as the versatility of your control type.
The game isn't "UNPLAYABLE". I played it fine on my 3DS XL, and I keep pressing the left trigger a lot so that I'm always locking on to the monster. The controls aren't ideal though, and it's better with the C nub stick thing with a New 3DS.
@96OopAmgems Well, when I start a game and see there is an option menu, it's the first thing I check (of course, I check the manual before, but they are digital and super short now).
I wish you a good time with this "official rajang hunting" game. ^^
