The greatest dsiware game Pop Island is getting a 3DS version.
According to Oliver Dennis (President of the company) in an e-mail, posted on Pop Island Wiki
"I've got great news for you - we are working on the 3DS system. Pop Island 3DS development should start in the middle of 2012"

I loved the first two! The only problem was my thumb got a little sore using the d-pad, and that was fixed with the 3DS Circle Pad. The 3DS version will obviously include 360° movement and improved graphics, as well as new characters and courses. The two things I would really want added is an online mode that tracks your overall ranking/score, and one or two new game modes.

I hope this is a 3DSWare game, since one of the things that made the first two so great is that they were amazing games at such a cheap price.

Oh right - Pop Island. After looking for a good DSiWare game I come upon Pop Island Paperfield, a cheap DSiWare title that supports multiplayer and had high eShop ratings. Unfortunately I made the mistake of buying it. Many reviews may praise it for its features - but it remains to this day the only piece of paid downloaded software that I have deleted from my 3DS.

Though this game remains popular with others I just couldn't enjoy it. The menu and general interface seems cheap and badly designed. The environment looks cheap and the graphics are just trashy. Putting all of the bad graphics aside I got bored with the gameplay after about 5 minutes. It's not that I dont like capture the flag gameplay - it just didnt interest me in this game. The character selection didnt help. Playing as strange tanks or cars flying over mountains made of stripes was just weird and made me question why the hell I was playing this game. The problem with the eShop store is that you can only rate software after playing it for an hour. In the end I didnt want to play the game for another 40 minutes just to show my distaste for it.

So in conclusion yeah... not really looking forward to a 3DS release.

Single player is okay but local multiplayer is hectic and super fun! Assuming its an eShop title, day one buy. I hope they keep download play as an option and am excited to see what new additions it will have. I'm a bit disappointed that it's starting development in the middle of the year though, it will be quite a long wait.

Eh, I'm gonna need odenis to really improve things for me to be interested beyond full 360˚ analog control for me to get it. I really liked and played the original to death, but with absolutely no innovation whatsoever with Paperfield, I played it for only about 15-30 minutes before I put it away for good. So, not day 1 purchase for me; I'll wait for the reviews before I take the plunge.

Exactly.

While I really enjoyed the first game, the second felt like merely more of the same. Don't get me wrong, I love the play style, but they might want to consider upping the ante and adding additional levels of difficulty, something that would give the experienced players another layer of difficulty, while not scaring away newcomers. (see Mario Kart Wii Auto/Manual drifting) Another nice addition would be a streetpass upgrade/part system.

I understand these comments (besides Geonjaha, because that game not only had interesting graphics and above decent music. Because that was developed by little to no people.) Especially if your Europeon (I believe there it is $7.99 U.S./800 Nintendo Points) and got paperfield but nevertheless it is a great game. That does have some copying and pasting as well as redundancy.

Hmm... Pop Island isn't a deep and immersive game, but it's cheap and fast and a lot of fun. Getting downloadable play so that you can have a whole group of friends playing together is also an excellent feature. For anyone who likes social gaming, it's hard not to recommend.

Not sure I need a 3DS replacement since the existing game works just fine and allows me to play against anyone with a DS system - even if that means an old "DS phat". The one feature that might change my mind is online multiplayer.

I think Paperfield was really the equivalent of DLC. It had to be a separate title due to the fact that DSiware didn't support it but I think with a 3DS version we'd end up with DLC instead of a mini title.

Anyway I enjoyed the first one enough but I'd like some additions(obviously). Online play would make the game really fun, especially if you could have a large number of players at the same time. How about some other modes? What about including Rising Board in the package?

Looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Can't wait! I hope that quote is legit (I imagine it is).

@Oregano I do have to agree that Paperfield was more or less DLC.

I never thought of Paperfield as "DLC" before, but that makes sense. It's cool that you can get it as a stand-alone game too though!

I enjoyed Pop Island-Paperfield as well as the developer's tower defense game, Glory Days. For the PI sequel, however, I hope for online play. That seems to be asking a lot for a Nintendo title I guess, especially a download. Please Odenis, make it happen.

Awesome, most likely an insta-buy for me! Even more interested in a 3DS sequel to their tower-defence game though. If they could add single-cart multiplayer to that as well, I might even buy it twice.

Niiiice, Pop Island still stands as one of my favorite DSiWare games, and a 3DS release (with hopefully online play) will be an insta-buy for me.

Pop island for dsi is one of my favorite games and me and my mates often play it together! A 3ds version is just what I have been waiting for and now it is on its way. GREAT! I think on-line multi-player would be awesome and some new modes too like maybe football, tag, tag virus, keep the flag or even Tower defence. Some new characters too would be nice like a rollerblading giraffe or something. DLC would be cool extras. New maps as well! Download play would be great to still have as well. What always annoyed me was that in multi-player I got called player 1 and who was player 3, names would be better. Cant wait to see what Odenis will do on the 3ds version of Pop Island! Whoooooooo!!!!!

Liked the multiplayer on the "standalone expansion", so might look into this.

What we need is customisable characters. So you can chose the animal, the colour, the transport, and your name. That would be awesome right? oh and Voice chat for online maybe huh?
