I actually do think it is either just poor coding or something that could be fixed with a patch although they probably won't if they haven't addressed it by now. I know their excuse for not using the 3D so much was due to the framerate problems which very well could be true but I just think it is more because Game Freak really hasn't made a game like this ever and they struggled doing so. The most 3D like game they made since was HarmoKnight.
I know the 3DS is not struggling with these battle instances or any of the game really, because at times it runs perfectly, its only at random angles or just at random times the frames slow down, sometimes you can even see the same exact instances during battles that won't drop at all but will drop at other times which is why I think its more on Game Freaks end, not the 3DS's. Pokemon X/Y looks great but compared to other games on the 3DS that use full 3D all the time with no significant slow downs, no, not that great. Even the over world lacking any 3D to me is questionable considering a huge majority of it is fixed at one angle, it isn't like Zelda: A Link Between Worlds where everything is actually 3D like when you go into walls, you can see the entire world is 3D.
Just bums me out because I love the 3D effect personally and I know it would have been awesome in all of Pokemon X/Y. Looks amazing in the new Zelda, don't see why it couldn't have worked for Pokemon. I mean quite a few 3DS games use full 3D all the time and look a lot better than Pokemon X/Y. MH3U, MH4, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Resident Evil: Revelations to name a few.
Revelations is probably the best looking 3DS game to date and it didn't even have frame issues like this in Pokemon. To make matters worse, have you all seen the new Iron Fall tech demo, some new eShop game coming to the 3DS. Having played all the games I mentioned and seeing all they did in that Iron Fall engine which was super impressive on the 3DS, I just find it really hard to accept that this is as good as Game Freak could do. Hopefully it either gets patched in or I guess we can hope their next iteration is developed better.
Not saying they didn't do an excellent job, best Pokemon game I have played in my opinion but it just seems like they didn't have the time to get the coding working better using 3D, so they opted out using it for most the game.
