In fact, I have to say I still have some qualms over the fact this is a paid internet application at all. I mean okay, I hear that if this wasn't the case they'd never have been able to add backwards compatibility to begin with, but it still makes me think of Nintendo as removing simple features that were once free in order to charge people to use them.
It has use for me. I have Pokemon in Diamond, HeartGold, Soulsilver, Black and Black 2 that I want/need to transfer over so they're all in one spot. As for it being tied to the system, that does suck, but you can always transfer it over to a new system(just like digital games). It only costs $5 a year, that's nothing. I usually buy $20 eShop codes anyway from time to time so it works out.
There is one thing nobody is thinking about here. If you wanted to get some of the Pokemon you can only get by making different choices in the game then you can dump your game's Pokemon onto the bank and start again. Or maybe you just want to start again but don't want to lose your favourites you've built up. Even easier with mass transfers rather than trading one Pokemon at a time, now possible without actually having to own two copies of the game and two 3DSes.
...Wait people actually do stuff with their breeding rejects? I just "delete" them all. xD
Well usually, and maybe this is just me, you're breeding something that's awesome and usually in demand. Like a starter, dragon or something else breedable and cool. A bit of a waste just deleting them now that there's online trading. With wonder-trade you could make someone pretty happy when they get something like Chimchar, Froakie, Dratini or Rotom with an unfavorable nature. Without wonder-trade you can demand something equally as cool for the pile of rare Pokemon you just breed.
You are supposed to get it for cloud storage but cloud storage is pointless if its tied to your system, sure you get extra storage, but really with a 32 GB memory card you should be able to storage as many pokemon as you need physically.
How much space is even really needed to store the information about which Pokemon you have, a few KB?
if you have all your boxes completely filled, want to transfer your Pokés from B/W/B2/W2 or want that special Celebi it's not pointless. sadly only the last point is my case.....

Cloud is in many ways a phenomena that creates system or hardware independence by offering central services regardless of what you have locally, hence to tie the Pokémon Bank application to your specific 3DS unit is a contradiction to the whole cloud concept in the industry. I wish Nintendo finally let's that bone loose, software and services tied to hardware instead of an account is beyond obsolete, its archeological...

sincerely I always thought those Pokémon Box/Ranch/Bank games/apps were all about putting the excess Pokémon in an expanded "box" and getting one or two extra Pokémons either rare, with an ability/attack that they can't learn or both... maybe I got the concept wrong
