I've been thinking for a while now about what will eventually come after the 3DS. Not just small changes like size, but a real changes that deal with the whole concept of Nintendo's next portable gaming machine. Will it go the way of the Vita and go for more power and less gimmicks? Or will we just continue to keep getting better and better DS type machines over the years to come?
Wouldn't be surprised if we got a sharper, more Vita-like display next. Although count on it being a DS of some sort. Nintendo doesn't change machine schemas entirely unless it has a really good reason to.
Not sure I would say the Vita isn't as gimmicky as the 3DS, though. That touchpad on the back...
Then again, if there is one company that consistently manages to surprise me by bucking the popular trend, it is Nintendo.
Nintendo seems to be the industry leader when it comes to exploring uncharted territory regarding how the game controls. I mean.... shoulder buttons, the controller rumbling, analog sticks, touch control, and now the Wii U's Gamepad...The 3D is the only big Ninty innovation so far that didn't really emphasize how the game controlled, but rather how it looked. To be fair, though, Nintendo wanted to make a 3D handheld for a long time. Just look at the Virtual Boy.
Anyway, my point is that when everybody else is happy to accept the status quo and just perfect on what has come before, it is usually Nintendo who comes along with something completely out of left field and revolutionizes the industry. More often with their home consoles than with their handhelds, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next Nintendo handheld completely defies expectations. That, for better or for worse, is how Nintendo rolls.
I really hope Nintendo can pull something out of left field like they did when the Wii came out. I remember the pure amazement of everyone. Im just not sure what is left to do. Good thing Nintendo is the innovator and not me.
@MetroidofTime: I remember not being able to think of what there was left to do when the DS was out; I remember joking about how they could "add a third screen"... so then when I saw the name of the 3DS for the first time I freaked out because I thought they had really done it, hahaha!
...but then I was even more amazed when I heard it would have glasses-free 3D — it seemed like it was so futuristic!

I would think the next handheld will be released around 2016 time... I just wonder if they'll stick with the clamshell design. Its not a "bad" design, but I do like just turning it on and there you go.
Whereas you have to open and then turn it on. Not to mention there's more to break.
still hoping for holograms(or at least something impressive enough to make 2 screens and 3D seem like ancient tech)

I have a feeling they may go with 720p AMOLED screens like what you get on smart phones now that the tech is really cheap and hopefully capacitive rather than restrictive if they go with touch screen.
And I would think they'll keep the 3D screen in somewhere along the line for backwards compatibility. But I'm bored with second guessing Nintendo, they always come out with something you never expect.

Either way, it will be a joy to behold.
ok 720p AMOLED might not be mind blowing but it'd be a very welcome upgrade!

Since when have Nintendo's graphics ever been better than the gameplay? Also I would think they would look at the best, yet cheapest, tech available. I'll give Nintendo credit, they certainly think of the consumers wallet when making consoles. They never take shortcuts and use old tech and use them in new ways.
