Topic: My 3DS was pawned. What should I do?

Last Sunday, I made friends with a few people who I hadn't met before. I invited them to my apartment where they played on all of my devices. Anyway, one of them seemed to really enjoy playing my 3DS. They asked if they could borrow it, and I said yes, but you have to return it to me on Thursday. Fast forward to Friday, and I start to worry because she never came around to return my system. I find out the next day from my other friend that she had pawned it for money. .I talked to the police about it and gave them the serial number, and they said they would investigate but told me that I was at fault for letting this girl 'borrow' my 3DS. Should I wait to see if anything is turned up? or should I just bite the bullet and buy it all again, including my missing downloads?

seems like you got PWNED(sorry couldn't resist )
in this situation the best case scenario would be if it was all a prank from your friends to scare you but the almost realistic and believable best case scenario would be tracking the 3DS, somehow having the luck of its data being still there and managing to buy it back....
try to contact the person who borrowed it if you can't reach her get a new 3DS(and buy back only the games you liked the most, it's not worth rebuying everything if it was digital as it has no collection value)

when the police took down your information for their report and you gave them the serial number of the 3DS that was pawned, were you given a copy of the report? there are a few possible scenarios that can happen for you, but only by having filed a proper report with the police (instead of just talking to a cop buddy in passing, for example) can you really do anything to reclaim some of what you've lost.

(a) Once you've got the report with the serial number in hand, try checking around some of the local pawn shops. Tell them your property was stolen and pawned without your knowledge, and if they've got any 3DSes in stock, ask them to check for one with your serial number on it. Should your stolen 3DS turn up in their inventory, depending on the laws in your state you may have to pay them what they paid to take it off of her hands in the first place (you can file suit in court against her later on to get that money back if it's worth it to you, but filing fees may cancel out the benefits to where it'd be just on principle). Whether they return it to you or charge you for it, the important thing is that the pawn shop will have to report the person who pawned it to the authorities for having pawned stolen goods — they'll have taken down her information and gotten copies of her ID or whatever the state requires.

(b) if you are unable to locate your 3DS in any local pawn shops and the authorities turn up nothing as well, that police report will still help you to regain any downloadable content you may have purchased on your system via Nintendo themselves if you do wind up replacing the system yourself. You'd need to get in touch with Nintendo, they'll ask you for the report number and they'll work things out on their end with you once everything comes up legit. It won't help you in terms of locating your original system, your save files and whatever SD card and game cart you had in it will still be gone, but if you had a lot of downloadables, at least you'll have something left for your troubles.

To be honest, when looking around town for your system, you'll probably want to check local game shops that take merchandise as trade-ins, like Gamestop, Best Buy, etc. and so forth — you never know if it'll turn up, and i know Gamestop definitely takes your ID information whenever you trade in anything there. They'd probably be bound by the same laws as a pawn shop when it comes to traded merchandise, and they'd have to report this person to the authorities as well.

whatever happens, best of luck to you. it sucks being taken advantage of by someone you thought you could trust. :/

I came here to say exactly this...

And, you shouldn't call that person your friend anymore, considering they aren't. Just don't resort to theft or violence, however tempting it may be.

Never give expensive stuff or information to people you don't know.

She was very nice and became your friend that same day? Serial killers can do that, too.

Ouch. Tough luck. Try and track down it's whereabouts. It might be on sale.

serial killers can do anything they can be complete stranger, policemen, policewomen, your childhood friends, lover(s), teachers and relatives. heck they can even be your 'alter ego' caused from a trauma. XD
never trust too much on anyone not even in youself(but don't let it get to your head)

If the serial killer is already your best friend, family or yourself, then there's probably not much they'd need to learn from you.

I didn't get a copy of the police report, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask them if they kept it on file.

there's that too...
I personally don't trust with anyone that can't have a consistent behavior so strangers are on top of the distrust list as I don't know if they have a stable mind, I'm tired of weird freaks in my (real) life

@krisko: you should be able to check online for info re: how to go about getting a copy if your local PD has a website available.

that said, the rest of you guys, let's not kick the OP while they're down. I think they've already learned an important lesson, no sense rubbing it in :/

Ouch! I wouldn't lend my 3DS to my best friend. I have parental controls set up so nobody can play anything but early childhood games on it to dissuade anyone from wanting to steal it.

I'd wait a bit to see if you can get it back from the pawn shop somehow. I had a friend who was mugged, and the police caught the muggers a few months later and found his laptop still in the pawn shop.

Veloster

Damn, that really sucks!
Makes me almost feel positive about being so tight with my things, lol.

Anyways, really hope things work out for you and your reunited with your 3DS.

What about the friend who knew it was pawned?? Why diddnt she do anything about it with knowing what happened to it? D,,:

That's horrible, I'm sorry A former friend I had while attending college in California stole my phone two years ago. I reported it, but nothing happened I come from a fairly large city in Japan, and that never ever happened to me there. You just never hear about people willingly taking other peoples stuff in Japan as most people will chase you down if you drop or leave something to give it back.

I'm afraid you should just buy another. If another turns up, just sell one on EBay, I suppose. Or return the new one if the old one turns up right away.

My hype for Smash Bros. 4 is Officially OVER 9,000!!!!!! >8D

Though I still got plenty of hype left over for Mario Kart 8, Persona Q, Yarn Yoshi, anddddd Sonic Boom ;D

Super_Gravy

Its happened to somewhat me but its did happened to my brother. One of his friend willing to borrow stuffs and trade it for money. Heck he traded in his brother's PS3 for money. Now all of us won't let him borrow stuffs. Sometime you don't know your friends well since some of my friends like to leave their DVD or video games discs laying on the floor.

Some people just don't respect other people's property except for their own. (Or don't care at all.) I don't know who will take care of stuffs until you willing to try let them borrow your stuffs. I would let them borrow my almost meaningless stuffs like I can buy it again for $5 or something like that to know if they are careful and willing return it. The worst can happen for me to buy it again and never let the same people borrow my stuffs.

Some of my friends and I borrow stuffs all the time and it is easy to save money as well through this way.

Umm… Care to have some gravy?

Ralizah

You could tell Nintendo it was stolen and see if they'll let you re-download your games on a new machine. I wouldn't get my hopes up, though. I'm just amazed you'd lend an expensive game machine to a person you just met.

Ugh. Men.

I actually agree with JohnRedcorn. You invited semi-strangers to your apartment and let one borrow your system.

That's been my experience growing up in America so far, as nothing has ever been stolen from me but plenty of people have chased me down to give me/my friends their stuff back. Americans just seem to focus on the bad stuff

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
