Ok so this is a very interesting one and it was also really unexpected.

I took the plunge and bought it day 1. As you may imagine it is relatively bare bones compared to other versions, but it's surprisingly solid for a day-1 version of Minecraft.

At first I thought my map was resetting due to some bug, but the world actually spans several maps. How big can it be? Who knows. I think it might be bigger than on the wiiu at least. Talking about the map, I love that it's a permanent element in the lower screen instead of an item.

The one odd thing I notice so far is the draw distance, it's obviously relatively short as expected, but it seems to be shorter right in front of your line of sight than on the sides of the screen, which means you'll often see a mountain or building in your peripheral vision but it will disappear if you look directly at it.

I wonder if it will receive updates like the other console versions.

Edit: Ok so the Minecraft page confirms the maps are 2016x2016x128 (which is like twice as big as on wiiu!) and that updates will happen, including multiplayer.

Edit 2: ok caves are stupidly dark. You can't see at all without placing torches.

Neat to hear that it's getting updates and such, but it sorta felt that it should of just waited a bit longer to have these updates first, and a even better thought.....TO BE CHEAPER!. If it had online which I heard it's not getting from the updates, I would be slightly more interested in it, they just better not complain if the sales are not all that good.

Minecraft is a surprisingly demanding game, so I wouldn't be surprised if the multiplayer is limited to local.

It's still a wonder to see it running so well on the 3DS though! Too bad it's a bit bare bones right now, I hope it grows gradually like the other versions. Right now it could use some biome variety... It's plains and forests galore.

Thanks!

Ok, I have wasted a good while scrutinizing a map in creative.

Some notes:

The game seems to have most of the biomes, they are just super big and take huge sections of land, which is why the environment doesn't change too often.

Zombie meat is completely safe to eat.

Horses and rabbits are in this version.

Structures seem to be extremely rare. There's at least villages.

The Nether is in, the end is not.

The touch screen map is off-center and the upper/leftmost borders will draw void, while the rightmost/lower borders of the world go past the map (you can explore these edges, but the map won't change and your cursor will remain stuck on the edge of the map).

Again, dark places are pitch black. Caves are impossible to navigate without torches.

There's no achievements.

If anyone wants me to try/find anything, just tell me.

I kind of just enjoy wasting time exploring the worlds. I can get creative every now and then though.

More notes:

The game saves every 20 minutes and it counts the time even if you leave the system in sleep mode or you're using another app like Miiverse. So you'll often be greeted by a save screen when you come back.

Boats are hard to control.

I can't compare since I don't own a switch. But this is very much just an early access kinda thing.

It may grow a lot, but right now it's basically a full price alpha.

Does anyone know — when the game will actually be on the eShop? If it already is, how do you find it? I'm in Germany, and it's nowhere to be found.

Of course I own a New 3DS, so that requirement is out of the way. =^_^=

Wasn't it supposed to be right there, when the Nintendo Direct show was over?

I remember reading somewhere that it was only released in America, with Europe getting it at a later date.

I must have missed that. Even when using Google, to look for that specifically. Thank you for pointing that out to me. Makes me a little sad, but ... I've basically been waiting for a good number of years now, and already had this written off. It's a surprise, a massive surprise, to see it actually happening!

It seems a relevant person in Twitter revealed this is a custom build made specifically for the 3DS, not a port of a other version.

It explains how they could get it to run with an acceptable level of performance and bigger maps, but it apparently also means the game will never be compatible with other versions, so the better together thingy will never include this version.

It is a port of pocket edition 0.15.4, and they plan to bring it up to the equivalent of 0.16.1. In the version we get, some additions have also been made, such as villager trading, which wasn't in 0.14.1 originally.

Because it is not based on the "bedrock" versions that other platforms use, multiplayer compatiblity or "better together" is out of the question. However a limited multiplayer is in the planning stages, albeit likey only using local wireless, and not Internet play. More Nintendo exclusive content is also planned.

There was a length Q&A session with the devs that night, it's here on twitch. I've been asking them a ton of questions there.

If I ever get a Minecraft game again, it'll be the Switch version. I'm guessing this is basically like the mobile version or something, I dunno.

It's in a weird limbo where the closest thing is the PE but it's also not that much like it.

Like, it's similar to the early versions of the PE, but with things from the newer editions thrown in.

I can only hope the updates will make it more like the other versions sooner than later.

For example, it still has the stone cutter table. It's useless, but it's in there. But it's got real nether portals, not the nether reactor. A really nice modernised hybrid, and I'm eagerly awaiting it to drop on the european eshop. I'mma pounce it! Rar!!

This is a weird port(as far as timing). I wonder how it compares to the Vita version?

Oh, I didn't really expect that. The few games that have been on vita and 3ds have been more or less the same(as far as I know.) Granted as mentioned earlier this is more of a beta than anything.
