I just remembered that Hideki Konno said that there will be sixteen new tracks. That means that the retro tracks will have to be equally numbered to have a good mix of variety. I added up the math for four tracks for each game and realized that only four games would come up to the number sixteen. I don't think Nintendo would want more retro tracks than new tracks, so does that mean that some games might be excluded?
I was hoping there'd be additional retro cups unlockable by spending Play Coins, but maybe that's just me.
Otherwise, based on MKWii's pattern, the breakdown would likely be as follows:
SNES = 2 N64 = 2 GBA = 2 GCN = 2 DS = 4 Wii = 4
Barring they don't outright ditch SNES and GBA courses (which also seems likely given the push for 3D), that's how I see it.
If there's not going to be N64 Rainbow Road, then I hope for Toad's Turnpike at least. I hope Super Circuit doesn't get dumped, because there's still a few tracks like Sunset Wilds and Ribbon Road that would look very cool with upgraded graphics.
People like N64's Rainbow Road? Well, even if so, they have never included a retro Rainbow Road, unfortunately. I guess they don't want the new Rainbow Road's spotlight stolen. Ribbon Road and Sunset Wilds are great choices though. I can't wait for Super Circuit to be on 3DS.
Also, you have to figure that any retro course with water or ramps is going to be a good choice since it gives them a chance to show off gliding and underwater driving, breathing significant new life into old favorites. It'll be interesting to see an old Koopa Beach or Sky Garden.
@Adam actually IIRC they have included a retro rainbow once. In Mario Kart Super Circuit it has the new rainbow road and in the retro section they have the original rainbow road from the SNES. Been forever since I played that one though o.O
Oh, true! I don't really think of that the same though. They included the entire SNES game on there, every track. I meant that since they've started doing retro cups that pull from all previous games, they've never done a Rainbow Road.
Wario's Colosseum from Double Dash!! would be sweet! I loved the ramp where you are descending on the chain thing (you can drift the whole way down which felt real good to do). And Dino Mountain from that game too.
I wish they saved Baby Park. That track was so hectic in Double Dash, especially Bowser and Jr.'s special item Giant Spiny Shell, knocking everyone out pretty much because it'll be bouncing off walls. And man, in my game, they kept through bombs so there would be lots of explosions lol
I always remember Double Dash as being hectic and real fun. Hope this one is the same.
Is there any precedence of a course appearing in a retro cup for one game and later in a retro cup for another, or do they always pick different ones for each game? This is ignoring Super Circuit's Extra Cup for reasons mentioned earlier.
I don't seem to remember any retro repeats so far, but I am curious if they might make an exception (assuming this is a rule at all and not coincidence) just to put good water and air levels in.
Yeah, they never repeat retro tracks. SNES courses, well, there's Mario Circuit 1 2 and 3, as well as it applies to other courses. There's a track from the Snes MK I really want. It has the hills all around like you see them in the older Mario games. I forgot the name but I don't think they'll add the course of where there's a bridge that's "split" (huge body of water in the middle) considering I don't think you can drive out because it doesn't seem to lead anywhere out of it. And that part was annoying from what I can remember because you'd need to have the Feather to jump over it.
Hey... I just thought of something. Wouldn't it be cool if when using the Tanooki Leaf (assuming it makes you jump) that you could extend your jump a little by deploying the paraglider? I can't think of a use for something like that but it would still be a nice little addition.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
That part was hard without a feather but not impossible with a well-timed jump if I am thinking of the same course. I'd love to see some SMK courses with water areas added. I still wonder how much I'll like the idea of going underwater to drive instead of having to be fished out, but it would definitely make some old favorites new again.
Double Dash is still my favorite entry, so I'd love any retro remakes from that one. But did anyone mention Daisy's Cruiser? I'd love to have a go at that one again.

@wariowoods I totally forgot about that track and it's one of my favorites. It was cool how on Peach Beach you can see the same cruise ship in the ocean. I think they removed the ship in Peach Beach on MKWii because I never noticed it there, correct me if I'm wrong.
But racing on a cruise ship is kinda unexpected considering nothing like that has been done unless you want to count the awesome Airship Fortress which I'm happy that it's back in MK7

I so liked the track as well! I just couldn't remember: Thanks for bringing up.
