I always looked behind me every 20 seconds. But I think the lower screen will display the track, your location (as well as other nearby racers) and items other racers have like in DS.

Yeah, this is true... But in my opinion it's not as good as being able to look behind you. I wish they could have just included both. I don't need X as an item button, that's what L is for. X should be to look behind you.
I attended the Nintendo Connection Tour '11 yesterday, and one of the games I tried there was a demo version of Mario Kart 7. I played as Mario with his standard chassis, medium wheels and red glider with 'M' on it. In the demo version, I could also choose from a Super Mario Kart-themed chassis or the Egg 1 chassis from MKDS, and either small or large wheels. I wouldn't be surprised if there is only a choice of three wheel sets in the full game though.
The Coin system is much better than I thought, since the coins regenerate every lap! You can hold a maximum of ten at a time, but the big thing regarding the Coin system this time is CPU players can also pick up coins, hence the possible need for regeneration.
I was in first place most of the time, so I didn't get to try any of the new items (the most powerful item I got was a Red Shell, which works the same as MKDD, MKDS and MKWii). The good news is I wasn't hit by a single Spiny Shell, the bad news is it means I have no idea how powerful it is this time. My guess is it's back to normal (AKA MK64 and MKSS-styled).
I raced on three courses. The first one is a mountainous course which seems to combine elements of Wii Koopa Cape with GCN DK Mountain. There's a steep climb about two thirds of the way through, with boost pads and a barrage of boulders tumbling from above - you need to duck and weave between them as you boost up to the top! The course has three sections in which you glide, which happens automatically, and you have some control over your kart as you soar back to solid ground.
The second course is the beach stage from the trailer, and it lets you try underwater karting. Controls are exactly the same as on dry land, and items also work as normal...even Bob-Ombs explode when wet. O.o
The third stage is a jungle course, which I expect would probably be called 'DK-something' on account of the DK barrels littered around one section. There is a large pink-ish flower which works like the mushrooms in Wii Mushroom Gorge, as well as a section which allows you to glide across a stretch of water, or dive straight down and drive through it.
I'm disappointed that I couldn't try a retro course (I was hoping for at least Kalimari Desert), but at least I got a good feel for the game. I know that it is one I'll definitely want to seek come December!

I went to the Nintendo Connecton Tour on the 26th. Love the game so far (despite it just being the E3 Demo), but would like to see some control changes... but that's probably just me.
On the nintendo eu mario kart 7 page; there is pictures of a bee car (yoshi is driving) and a picture of a mii on top of a globe (like the wifi for mario kart wii) - hopefully this means a brilliant wifi like the wii's mario kart
