I HATE Luigi's Mansion but I guess that's only because I always played in Bowser's plane and they forced you into the mud. On the other end of the spectrum whenever I saw Rainbow Road or Yoshi Falls I thought "time to win!"

Ahh, I was wondering how anyone could praise all the retro courses BUT Luigi's Mansion. Now I see. Yea, it is definitely biased. It would be nice if they balanced that.

As long as they don't make it one of the set of limited tracks you have to play when someone doesn't have the game. If it's anything like Mario Kart DS someone will ALWAYS not have the game and so we'll all end up playing those demo tracks more than anything else even though we own the game.

People have a Nintendo handheld but not Mario Kart? People like that, that's why society invented ostracizing.

You know how it is. You're at some kind of nerd-fest and someone has brought along their girlfriend (lol, Nerds have girlfriends?) who only owns a DS for Nintendogs. You let her join in anyways because more numbers are better.

And that's how you get 8 players in a Mario Kart race!

Anybody else think that Thwomp should be an item? Dropping a humongous indestructible stone-faced cretin behind you to start floating around one spot and drop onto unsuspecting racers would be epic win! xD

I hope they go all out to make this game a solid online title.
Mario Kart DS was a really good game, but its lack of a decent online mode kept me from playing it too often.
When I first played online I thought my L button was broken but it turns out that you just can't hold items behind you, I find it really odd that they did that and I hope it never returns in a future title because it kind of wrecked the online mode in my opinion - as well as having limited tracks and only four players.

It's been a long time since then though and they did a pretty good job with Mario Kart Wii so I have high expectations for this title.

You can hold items behind you by holding X button

EDIT: I only tried it on Mario Kart DS demo downloaded from my Wii. In Single-Player mode you can do it with both L and X. Is it really impossible when in online?

Ah, haven't really tried it playing too often (recently at least) so didn't realise that.
Sounds pretty awkward if you ask me, it's much easier using the L button (for me at least).
I guess being able to do it in some form is better than not at all though.

Edit: Just tested it and still can't hold them behind you, no matter which button you choose... So as I said, I hope they never do that again.
And I just discovered another problem while I was at it... Hackers.
I know they exist in the Wii one too, but that's the first time I've had someone use a lightning every second so you can't even move. D:

Yeah, Mario Kart DS wasn't really that great online. It was ok but it wasn't great especially when most people stopped playing and hackers started to become commonplace. Even worse than that and before the hacking became a problem people would just rage quit if you beat them. They fixed a lot of that in the Wii version along with killing of snaking which, to me at least, was a huge win.

On the DS it's just hackers and when it's not and you're doing well people just quit ending the race and sending you back to the lobby. At least with the Wii version you can just get into a game and just play non-stop for as long as you want with lots of players......

I had no problem living without holding items behind me. Considering it was Nintendo's first game for their first online service, I thought they did well. I never minded rage quitters because I didn't care about my score. If they quit, oh well, I knew I won and I had a good race. When people started to hack it was when it got annoying.

But Nintendo has been making online games for awhile now, and their last Mario Kart didn't have these problems to my knowledge (didn't play it much), so I see no reason to expect anything but a good online this time.

@Adam The rage quitting was because it skewed the score but it was annoying because it slowed the game and meant that you rarely got to the end of four race match with four players. On the Wii it was just non-stop racing and when people did rage quit it didn't ruin the game so much. They didn't rage quit as much because it wasn't "worth the effort" but when people did they just threw some new people in when the next race started and you were off again.

Also I'm fairly sure that on the Wii they banned hackers because I never see them online. When I was looking at the time trial leaderboards last, which was a while ago, there were some really dodgy times but they don't stay up for long. IMO Mario Kart on the Wii is the by far the best Nintendo has done with online thus far.

No argument. I'm just saying you have to consider the fact that MKDS was their first online game, to my recollection. I can understand complaining about Strikers or Brawl a few years after when they should have figured this all out, but I think they did well considering the circumstances for MKDS. MKW's great online gives me all the confidence I need that MK7 will be fine.
