I think on 50cc you usually get 1 per race, on 100cc 2 or 3 per race, and on 150cc 3 or (sometimes) 4 per race. Also, from my experience, in first place you have about a 10% chance of getting a mushroom, so you might be able to dodge 1 blue per race; if you're good at blue shell dodging you should expect to get hit anywhere from 2-4 times on 150cc.
If there's a Computer player reasonably close to you then just stop and let them pass when you see that someone has a blue shell, let them take the hit and then just carry on in first place like nothing happened. I did this during most races in 150cc and Mirror and it made it a whole heap easier to get a three star rating.
Yeah, therems plenty of strategy involved. I keep an eye on the bottom screen and when I see a blue shell, I take note of it. Once it starts flashing, I look to see if there's someone closer after me, slam on the breaks and let them eat it :3
All this while going sooo fast- computers shouldn't even be that close to catching up to me, but a little rubberband AI should be the cause.
Also, hydro planing on Neo Bowser City... Need to practice on that. Love how semi-real the physics are in this game. MKWii was too bouncy and it felt like everything was made out of rubber.
Oh, and I'm now used to the Mii's voice.. Not that bad, really. Guess I'm just so used to it. Will be using Wario, Daisy, Lakitu and Wiggler as my other characters of choice

Yeah, I do that too; I was just responding to the person who asked how often blue shells appear. But if you do happen to have a mushroom it's better to just dodge it. Even better, if you also happen to be close to a shortcut that requires a mushroom to use, you can dodge and take the shortcut at the same time. How awesome is that BTW (this is unrelated but I just thought of this) AI rubberbanding has been toned down a lot. Instead the CPU players are a whole lot smarter. They have really good aim, and they'll wait until you're more vulnerable to use their items against you. They can also dodge your items as well. It's nice to see that nintendo are trying to give players a challenge by actually giving the CPUs a high skill level, not having them red shell you every 5 seconds
If the 3DS has not been discontinued SM3DL and MK7 are awesome games, but if the 3DS has been discontinued Sony has taken over the world. It is not true that both Sony has taken over the world and SM3DL and MK7 are not awesome games. Therefore:Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are...
Alright, hoping to get this game tonight, whether or not I actually go online I've no clue yet. (Shy Guy looks to be my replacement since Dry Bones is out, lol) Gonna unlock most of the characters and all that first.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
1. The computer players maintain their placements way too easily amidst the chaos in 150cc. 2. Getting the drift sparks to blue (so you can do a boost) seems a bit tougher than in previous games. 3. I rarely get any aggressive items in 150cc, even from 6th-8th place. The CPU gets them all the time though. >_> 4. Been booted out of community races a few times. To be expected I guess, but still annoying.
The blue shell hasn't been nearly as obnoxious as it was in MKWii, but I may just be lucky, haha.
I hate the method of unlocking stuff in this game. 5,000 coins for every regular part and then 20,000 for the gold parts will take forever. >.< Atleast the Gold Parts have alternate methods, but those are just as long.
Also, does anyone know how to unlock the Pipe Frame and Plane karts? They aren't mentioned on IGN.
@pix: it's not hard to get the drift sparks to blue if you know the layout of the track involved, but that comes with practice. you can do yourself a favor by jumping into the drift from a wider angle, if that makes any sense. for example, you're more likely to go blue in a shallow right turn if you're facing left when you go into the drift.
coming from MK64 back in the day and the perfection (yes, i said perfection, stfu) that is MKDS's drift/boost system, I didn't really like the drifting in this game at all when i first fired it up. now that i'm used to it, though, i really enjoy it — between no back-and-forth left/right and the circle pad instead of the d-pad, it's much easier on my thumb, haha :3
BEST THREAD EVER future of NL >:3
[16:43] James: I should learn these site rules more clearly
[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!

Yeah I'm getting a pretty good feel for it. Still bugs me every now and then though, haha.
This is easily my favorite Mario Kart game. The items are incredibly well-balanced and the physics feel pretty much perfect. The online features aren't as awesome as I was hoping for, but it's so freakin fun that I don't really care.
