I think it's important to consider that Nintendo seems to be doubling down on the ARM architecture that all of its previous handhelds used (and almost all current smartphones, incidentally). It even seems to be looking into using ARM for the Wii U successor to allow a unified ecosystem and easy porting between the two lines.

Given that, backwards compatibility is likely. The next Nintendo handheld will probably use the same architecture and the same format of physical media and be backward compatible with the DS, 3DS, and N3DS software. If you already have a 3DS, it's probably a good idea to just wait for the next system, which will be out 2017, 2018 at the very latest.

I find myself really hoping that the Wii 3 and next handheld are just like the PS4 & Vita (but more powerful, obviously). I think the dual screens really hurt the Wii U's price point & sales and the 3DS' screen quality.

I know Nintendo b crazy, Miyo so innovative, but I'd like their next-next gen to be back to basics, sans gimmicks. Make art from adversity and try to innovate the mechanics within the screen, not without. That and deliver really solid sequels and new IP.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Probably not too far off of PS4 and Vita. I think the aim is to give them similar architecture so that they don't run into another Smash Wii U/3DS situation again, using far more resources to have to build two games from scratch instead of one game easily ported/optimized for both systems. Then of course the cross save, cross buy, and remote play features of the PS4/Vita would be ideal as well. The Nintendo Fusion rumour is definitely hogwash, but there are some very exciting things that can and will come out of Nintendo seeking to unify their hardware and software.

As for gimmicks, I really like dual screens and find it difficult to go back to not using them. The Gamepad hasn't revolutionized the way I play games per se, but it is very convenient and I prefer it. Off-TV play is also very convenient. I would only ask for a pad that is a little smaller, lighter, and more ergonomic. 3D, I could take or leave, but as long as they continue to perfect it with things like the face-tracking tech in the N3DS, I welcome it too.

The dual screens on the handheld though is a no brainer for me. It's a much better experience than the single screen of the Game Boy line, in my opinion. I would hate to regress on that. I love my Vita, but it has done absolutely nothing that made me thing "Wow, I wish this was possible on 3DS!" For me, there was no compromise in experience due to the downgrade in visuals. The graphics are nice on Vita, but my favorite Vita games are stuff like Persona 4 and Danganronpa, which would run just fine on 3DS. Virtue's Last Reward does. I would actually go as far as to say the reason why the 3DS succeeded and the Vita failed was because Sony wanted to make the most technically advanced hardware possible for a $200 handheld, forgetting the fact that nobody wants to play a cinematic AAA game on handheld anyway, and Nintendo focused on core gameplay experience.

By the way, Nintendo actually went all out with the 3DS screen. The parallax barrier designed and made by Sharp was cutting edge at the time and one of the most costly competents of the device. That's why the 3DS was $250 at launch.

Its definitely worth upgrading, you will find yourself going back to older games to put the 3d slider back on and play them how the developers intended you to see them.

I did not regret getting mine for 1 second.

I'm surprisingly interested in it. I think it's for that face-tracking technology. This is something 3DS has desperately need since day 1 quite frankly.

I agree

I have a feeling they aren't going to make a amiibo accessory for the original 3DS models so the only thing making me want a New 3DS is amiibo functionality right now.

In the Japanese version of the latest Nintendo Direct, the NFC portal for the original 3DS was shown (though it was the same picture they showed when they first announced the plan), so it looks like it's still underway.

Probably won't make its way outside of Japan. We will see however

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I will get one regardless if a homebrew exists (For any platform) to backup and restore amiibo data.

Don't mind buying some amiibo's if I am actually going to use the function as intended. Not willing to start again all the time just to test if something is pointless or not.
