Topic: Is it really worth upgrading to New 3DS?

I'm unsure whether I should upgrade or not and if it's worth it.

What I really want to know is how long the New 3DS is expected to last. Is it only going to last a year or so until Nintendo announces it's next-gen handheld? Or will it last for 2, maybe 3 years? I don't really see the point in upgrading from my 3DS XL just for a few new features and exclusive titles, if the next-gen handheld is likely to be right around the corner.

Also, I've noticed quite a few people don't seem to be too bothered about getting the New 3DS at launch and say they will hold off for a while until different limited editions come out etc. Is there much point in this if the New 3DS is only going to last for a year or two?

Does anyone else feel the same? Any thoughts on how long you expect the New 3DS to last? Will you be getting one at launch or waiting? Will you be getting one at all?

Well, since i dont believe that Xenoblade 3D will stay the only N3DS exclusive title, its the same as asking "was it worth upgrading from a GameBoy to a GameBoy Color"
If youre not interested in is potential exclusive Library and its exclusive features and improvements, the 3DS already offers quite a heftly load of games.
If you like its improvements and you want to be prepared for eventual exclusive software, there is no other way than to upgrade.

The Key thing here is, that its not the same thing as going from a regular 3DS to an XL. Both systems are the same, one is just bigger. With the N3DS, you have a different system (Much like the GameBoy Color back then)

I think you should upgrade if the 3DS is your only console; otherwise it's not worthy. I play mostly on WiiU and 360 and I'm also saving to buy a PS4 so I'm not gonna spend money to buy a N3DS. In the recent past I've always asked myself if it was time to upgrade my old white fat 360, but I prefered to invest my few Euros on a 3DS and a WiiU.

Praise the Sun, and Mario too.

I think you should ask yourself; Are you interested in Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and are you willing to buy a new system for that? If not; Are the other updated features (C-Stick, improved 3D, faster processing power) enough to update?

I'm surprisingly interested in it. I think it's for that face-tracking technology. This is something 3DS has desperately need since day 1 quite frankly.

I think I'm gonna go for it, for the improved 3D, which I like in general now, but is basically pointless due to the extremely narrow sweet spot. There won't be much in terms of exclusive games, Xenoblade aside. Also, from everything I've seen and read, the console iteration of Xenoblade is superior, meaning the handheld version looks EVEN worse and has no additional features to speak off (aside from 3D^^).
I'm pretty sure the next device will be announced early next year, and on the market in 2017. Of course, if you're like me, you're not going with the first iteration anyways and will at least wait for the inevitable "XL" iteration. By that token you'll probably get another year "out of" the New3DS. Furthermore, depending on that whole "Fusion"-thing everyone keeps bringing up being realized, it might be a relatively costly proposition. Of course, there is always the consideration, when to jumb ship to a new generation anyways, Day1 is normally not the best move, speaking purely rationally ^^
I'd say go for it if you want it for the 3D or maybe if you're a MH player

I just bought a brand new LE Persona Q 3DS XL. I love it, and I don't plan on upgrading at this time. I also had a DSi, and I remember being disapointed with it because it couldn't connect to the internet very well. I was hoping the 3DS XL would be able to connect better, but it is just like the old one as far as its web browsing limits. Web browsing is something I really wish it could do. Maybe the faster processor on the new 3DS will make that possible, but I'm still not willing to replace my brand new one.

I would say I am interested in most of the new features and I would say Xenoblade Chronicles and Monster Hunter 4 catch my eye. I know MH 4 is compatible on the current 3DS system but it would play better with the New 3DS' C-Stick.

For me, the question isn't really "do the new features and exclusives interest me" (they do), it's will the New 3DS last long enough to justify spending £140 - £180 to upgrade? Or will I upgrade and within the space of 12 months, the next-gen console will be announced?

I seriously doubt the next gen console will be announced within 12 months. They don't invent new hardware just to ditch it a year later. That'd infuriate people who've spent that money. I'm guessing this'll probably indicate another 3 years-ish of the 3DS.

Do you think it would be worth it for an original 3ds player? I still ha v ent upgraded to the xl.

Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

Maybe you're right but I don't think it's that unlikely to see an announcement of the next-gen system in a year or so, for it to be released 2 or so years from now.

So I guess we are saying the New 3DS will last at least two years from the next-gen handheld. Is this enough time to warrant an upgrade?

I would say if you have a 3DS it's probably worth an upgrade but as an XL owner I'm not so sure.

Sure they do. GBA SP was out in 2003, followed by the NDS in 2005. NDSi was out 2009, followed by the 3DS in 2011. See the pattern? ^^ My "guess", as stated, N3DS is out in 2015, followed by -something- in 2017. If said something it's to released in 2017 chances are it will announced in 2016. It's not like the N3DS gives the 3DS family significantly longer legs performance-wise. It's just what it is.

I think it is. Xenoblade 3D, extra C-Stick(so you don't have to buy a CPP and play games like Re Revelations and Moon Chronicles with a better control scheme) we'll also get some other exclusives too.

For me yes. Purely because i wont be buying the original model of Nintendo's next gen portable. This Gen has taught me well Obviously its going to differ from person to person but the enhanced 3D (how it should have been from the start) and the added buttons/ cpu power makes it completely worthwhile to me

You raise a good point actually, you could get the New 3DS and then just wait until the 2nd or 3rd revision of the next-gen console is out instead of getting the original at launch. Might be a good idea!

Ive bought 3 3DS's now, The original, The XL and now the new XL. Really should have waited and just got the XL to be honest, and that would have given the system time to build-up a great line up too. But ah well, i have learnt from my mistakes now

As a New 3DS owner, yes it is worth the upgrade. The new 3D effect has to be seen to be believed. It truely is a game changer, as I now have my 3D on all the time. Speaking of game changers, the C-Stick has made games like Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3D go from OK to fantastic.
Nintendo are probably seeing how well the New 3DS does... if it does well, I imagine they might even keep the '3DS' for another iteration later on. If it doesn't do too good, then perhaps they'll announce their next portable in a year or two.
It all comes down to how much you love the 3DS. Personally, it's my favourite console of this generation, so of course I'm interested in the upgrade.
I couldn't go back to my 3DS or XL anymore. The New 3DS is so fast, so much better at everything it did before. Plus, games like Xenoblade and Majora's Mask will either require the upgrade, or benefit from it in some way.
Go get yourself a New 3DS in February. You won't regret it.

The upgrade seems worth it as the system is such an improvement, not just a repackaging. I have a feeling they want to ride it for 2 or 3 years and have synergy happening with the next system / home console. Portable on the go, home stationed at the home tv. 1 nintendo system.

And you can't ride that long with a 3dslite samekindathingedition. But putting in extra hardware and risking a split in the userbase isn't worth it for only a year and a half of profits to top out.

So I won't essentially be able to be sure, but this is more than a default reissue by all accounts, and my hunch is that it's expected to last longer - and it's tempting me to go get a n3ds myself.

Everyone says the 3D effect is great thanks to the new tracking system. I never use 3D on my current XL as the sweet spot is just far too small and not worth the hassle whilst trying to enjoy the game. So everyone saying the 3D is great on the New 3DS is convincing me to get one. That along with the C-Stick will make a big difference to new and current games.

From the start, I always thought I would probably be ordering the New 3DS at launch. I just wondered if anyone else felt the same way about it.

I have a nintendo 3DSXL and I love it, I am going to wait until there are some better games to come out for the new XL. As of now I keep the 3D off because the sweet spot is so fragile but for me that doesn't affect the game play. I do like the 3D tracking in the new XL but the only reason I would upgrade is the speed boost. The loading times on the current 3DSXL is terrible, everything takes forever to load but as of right now I won't be upgrading until the summer most likely.
