It is true that retailers can sell digital codes, but c'mon, how many people are really going to use that option? Probably not many, as one of the big advantages of digital purchasing in the first place, is bypassing a trip to the store. Sony & MS would probably already be doing the same thing, if it was such a lucrative idea (it's more of a reassurance to retailers on Nintendo's part, that they're not being left behind).

There are many reasons why people would buy retail download codes. Here are some of the reasons I can think of:
1. Credit cards. Many people (especially those aged 6-17) don't have access to credit cards, and parents are unwilling to use prepaid cards or link their cards to their child's 3DS, considering how easily their child could abuse that. Additionally, some people prefer the anonymity cash provides over a credit card.
2. Gifting. Sure, you could always give the cash as the gift, but who would prefer cash that can be given without foresight when at least with a download card you know at least some thought was given?
3. Retail purchases promote local business. Ok, maybe it's true there aren't that many mom-and-pop-type video game retailers out there, but jobs manning the tech department at Target really can't be outsourced.

Exactly.

You wouldn't make much profit though... You buy a $40 game you wouldn't be able to sell it for $40 because GS doesn't give you $40 for a used game... And you could use amazon or eBay but it would still be used
Also Japan is getting MK7 as download on Nov 1 and we are getting it Oct 18 before Japan, it's Europe that has it now

I was thinking the same thing. Or even to add a feature to future games where we can just download the retain version to our DS. I'd like to see that happen. I share a few games with my kids and it'd be really convenient to be able to do that. It's a pain carrying around a case with 30-40 games. I'm indecisive. lol I do have several games downloaded from the eshop, but I have different games for different moods. I hope they do something like that.

Pretty girls game too!

That would DESTROY profit. Imagine this. I buy NSMB2 retail. Then, I go home and just get NSMB2 download for free. That's $40 Nintendo loses. And everyone would do it. If I could download Mario Kart 7 (darn you Japan!!), I'd do it in a heartbeat. Then I'd sell MK7 and make profit. Bad...bad...bad for business.

I bought the physical copy of MK7 and it came with a digital copy download code. I then sold the cart for the same price I bought it for. 40 bucks.
