Anyone else thinking about getting this game? It looks like a lot of fun to me. The game Sadame is also on sale this week so I was thinking of getting that or this one.
This one looks interesting. I don't have money to spend on games for the moment but if this one recieves some recommendations of people here I'll probably end up getting it soon.
It is sort of an action/tower defense hybrid game and you control your avatar to take down armies of bad guys while collecting power ups and protecting Princess Lola who you can move around. Lola also gives you HP if you stand next to her.
It does have the 8-bit aesthetic, but there are constantly huge amount of enemies with no noticeable performance issues. The game also features download play which has run very smoothly as well. There is also a lot of nice manga style character art that pops up all over the place in the form of character select screens, loading screens, that you can feast your eyes on.
Finally the game has a sense of humour, for example, there are cute posters for Gotta Protectors while the game loads, and a jackpot bonus game where you can earn gold, fruit... or swirly poop (which gets you nothing). The game has a lot of depth, you seem to be unlocking something every 5 minutes, or the next 10 levels, etc. to keep you hooked.
Wait for the Nintendo Life review if you like, but so far this feels like an 8 - 8.5 to me.
Action Tower Defense? My Wife and I love playing Orcs Must Die together. Maybe this would be worth it. The price ($13) seems a bit high however, especially for both of us to buy it.
@Hey-Cha-La Thanks for the information mate, It does sound quite good! Do you think it has a lot of replay value? Do you know if the Download Play is limited to some missions or characters or is the whole game available?
@DefHalan I know it's not the same as having the game, but the Download Play feature is quite sweet and a huge plus.
When I first saw the scary-looking trailer in January, I knew I had to get this game, doubly so since there's so few tower defense games on 3DS, and class-based multiplayer is always fun.
Progression system, story, both compatible and progressable in Local multiplayer (unlike Fantasy Life), including download play. (albeit with limited character selection and no progression for the no-card player) Level editor, multiple classes and skill sets, freaking hilarious humor and super cute artwork at the end of each level. Levels (official and custom) are transferred to the clients via ad-hoc, so everyone, Download Play included, can play everything.
I'm loving the grotty mode 7 graphics, the cutting in half of sprites when they enter terrain, the LOD sprites, trash ass VA quality (in original Japanese) and the perfectly accurate intro.
The game is seamlessly programmed to have old, bad-looking mechanics and graphics, but yet still remains fun and avoids falling into the "bug" territory. All it's missing is the flickering of sprites trying to take layer priority.
Even the multiplayer has a heavy feeling of pre-2000 connectivity with the clunky transfer processes riddling everything outside of the gameplay. It feels like I'm connecting to the other players by snail mail, compared to the fancy shmancy lobby systems and synchronised screens of other 3DS multiplayer games - yet the actual gameplay multiplayer is flawless and bug-free.
When there's tonnes of enemies onscreen, the framerate doesn't chug (at least not noticably) and that's a feat on its own. Especially when you compare it to the smoother-looking Witch & Hero, which bogs as soon as the Witch starts hurling cyclones which I assume have pixel-accurate collisions because there's no other reason such simple sprite imagery would tank the 3DS so hard.
Complete nostalgia trip in every aspect. This is an example of a retro game done perfectly right.
Cheers Roy130390! I don't know exactly how long the game is and haven't beaten it, so I can't speak to longevity. Like Blathers has also said, the game is fantastic. It's like a chibi-style Gauntlet with the tower defense elements put in. It is nuts how well the game runs with so much on the screen (dozens of monsters and you are rapidly firing axes like some crazy shooter, and there are power ups and coins bouncing around everywhere).
Finally, as mentioned by Blathers, the partner player in Download Play doesn't get to use all the characters and is more an assist character for the owner of the game. So far it looks like all missions can be played two players.
It's really good. If I even have one complaint, it's the colour palette, which looks more pastel and so far uses very little deep red.
How is the normal multiplayer? Does anyone know? If normal multiplayer (both players owning the game) is better than download play, maybe I will get the game soon and have my wife pick it up later
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
I played THREE player co op today, download play with my sons. It got crazy and lot of hysterics as the game put tougher and tougher enemies into play.
As for multiplayer, one of my sons may decide to get the game for himself and then we can test it out.
Non-Download players enjoy the ability to level up their characters and skills. Download play only provides 2 of 5 characters with only a handful of the many abilities.
Multiplayer is story compatible. Any missions you complete count as completed for all players, and story cutscenes will play once certain missions are completed for those who have not yet seen them. In Download play, the child has no progress, so these cutscenes never show up on their game, but they can lean over to the host's 3DS and watch it there.
Stay safe, kids: Make sure to save frequently during multiplayer, and always use a stylus!
This game has been out for a month and there aren't any reviews from important sites and just like 2 videos about it on youtube, I'm not even kidding. Why is everyone ignoring this game so much? From what I have seen, the people that are playing it and doing small reviews are loving the game.
