get the XL, definitely.
it's WAY better, anyone recommending the normal 3DS is just doing so because they're still stuck with it and don't want to be left alone (sorry ) - or just don't want to admit to themselves that there's already something better available

i tried the XL at a store and the placement of the headphonejack alone dismisses it for me. i also dont like the two crack ins (no idea how to name that) when you open the 3DS, you know? oh and i have 2 bags for the 3DS where a Xl wouldnt fit in ^^

You mean the notches for the clamshell angles. The "click" angles. The first is designed for it to sit like the portable DVD players use to, with the 90 degree angle. Some people prefer that for watching movies now, and media is becoming a huge part of the 3DS. I didn't know that the original 3DS did not have the first notch, interesting.

The original 3DS also has a probably with its hinges too. They are easily cracked if you ever drop it. You have to be very careful with the original. Honestly though it comes down to what you can afford and can comfortably hold. If you have small hands, then the original 3DS will be more comfortable. If you have big hands then the XL will be more comfortable. Have you considered the 2DS? It doesn't come out until Oct 12th but it is only $129.99 and can play 3DS games. The only downside is that it has no 3D. It also has streetpass and spotpass like the 3DS. But if you don't care for 3D, then it's good option.

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword

@mumof3kids82: Really? I was under the impression that the original is extremely hardy! I've dropped mine several times (on pavement and the likes), and it's held up extremely well!

The XL is a far superior machine, and totally worth the extra money. Far nicer screen, better button placement, a lovely matte finish on the outside, actual buttons for start and select, etc. I highly recommend Fire Emblem: Awakening and Virtue's Last Reward. Everyone I have loaned those games to have fallen in love with them.

Currently Playing: Fields of Mistria (PC); Cookie Clicker (PC); Metaphor: ReFantazio (PC); Overboard! (PC)

I bought a 3DS XL last month. The bigger screen is totally worth it.. The last portable one I had was a gameboy color in the late 90s. It was totally worth it. I have always had a thing for Mario Kart and play that most. There are some good demos in the eShop that you can try.

I am definitely going to have to hold both of them and see what I like. I know the 3DS has some really great games that I really want to play. The game that pushed me over the fence to get the 3DS is the new Zelda game "A Link Between Worlds" I have to play that since I loved a ALTTP. I will check them out this week, since I have jury duty in a few week and I want to have the 3DS so I don't die of boredom waiting to be called lol

Yeah, if it doesn't fit well in your hands it will make playing the games far more of a chore unless they use a lot of touch screen. Either, like me, you get really sore fingers from holding the weight oddly so you can reach the buttons, or you wind up with it digging into your palm, if the unit doesn't fit your hand size well enough. If neither fits and you have some extra money, go with the XL so you at least enjoy the bigger screens as a trade-off.

I agree with the XL crowd - I can't imagine going back to the smaller screens! I will say it still suffers from the bottom 'ridge' marking the top screen, though it's nowhere near as big a problem.

I honestly don't see the point in getting Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate when Monster Hunter 4 will likely be over here in a year with full online play and is a brand new game(as opposed to a Wii Port with some stuff added to it). I agree with you on getting Monster Hunter, its just that at this point the money would be better spent on MH4 when it arrives.

And I second Kid Icarus: Uprising all the way. Right now, that is the 3DS' best game.

I have a 3DS and an XL, and I guess if I had to choose between the two of them, I'd pick the 3DS. I just like the graphics to be more clear. And I like the size more because I have tiny hands. lol

I'd definitely recommend getting an XL.
Everyone who has owned both systems that I know (myself included) find it to be a pretty substantial improvement.
The original's still pretty great, but XL's definitely the way to go.

As for games, first thing I always have to recommend is Kid Icarus: Uprising.
It's the best game on the system so far by a mile, in my opinion, and you can easily play it for hundreds of hours.
I already have to really recommend Etrian Odyssey IV, Virtue's Last Reward (if you can play 999 first) and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (better if you can find friends to play with).
That probably rounds out my top four 3DS games.

Other notables which are definitely worth considering are Mario Kart 7 (always good for a bit of multiplayer fun), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (fun way to waste a bit of time each day) and Fire Emblem: Awakening (definitely not my favourite game in the series, but still worthwhile).

If you want to download some eShop titles, I'd definitely look into Crimson Shroud before anything else, and then Mighty Switch Force!.

just got the XL and love it. I have played Mario Kart the most, but also love mario 3d, Star Fox and Madden. I have Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem and Luigi's Mansion- cool games, just haven't spent the time on them yet.
