@JarvanZheitk: Yeah, I have a protective case on my 3DS and the first thing that I thought of when I saw this new attachment was that I won't be able to use it without removing the protective case. Bummer.
o.O.........I don't like it very much. I was hoping it would be a tiny thing that would snap into the power jack or something and wrap around to be placed UNDER the ABXY buttons. Not a giant cradle!! I can't possible put that thing on AND continue carrying the 3DS in my pocket. The only solution is to just carry this attachment separately. I like to carry other stuff in my pocket as well Nintendo! Whatever though. Maybe its not as bad as it looks. Regardless, I'm of course buying one i just wish the execution of this would have been better. Also, I suppose this confirms 3DS lite or something in the next 12 months or so with 2nd stink installed and improved battery. Oh! Just had a thought...Perhaps Nintendo will use the form of this peripheral to their advantage. Like maybe you can use this also as an alternative charging dock but not only will it charge the 3DS but a 2nd battery inside the cradle. Then when the 3DS is plugged into it, it recharges using the cradle battery. If this is the case then perhaps its not that bad since it would be more advantages than just a 2nd stick. I can't think about this anymore....I'm just gonna sit tight until the 13th and see. I'm sure all will be revealed there.

I don't understand why any game would need more than one thumb pad. What kinda games are they expecting you to play with this?

Third person shooters, first person shooter, camera control....... twin stick shooters. Infact the Nintendo Life favourite Bit Trip Fate was effectively an on-rails twin stick shooter (the IR was used as one and the nunchuck as a second). The touch screen can beat the second stick for some applications and it or a/b/x/y do a decent job at most applications but it doesn't hurt to have the second stick.
All right, it seems all but inevitable that this thing is (unfortunately) real. So, what do you think they should charge for this peripheral? And do you think, in addition to the 2nd Circle Pad and additional shoulder buttons, it will have improved battery life?
It could end up bundled with certain games. It might even double as a charge stand, which would be good for me, since the current one is bulkier than this thing looks to be. Plus it'll be that much better if it's attachable.
Edit: As a standalone I could see it sell for about $20-$25, maybe a little more or a little less than that.
There's only two downsides I can see: bulk and potentially limited support.
I doubt the design is final, but there's really no way around the fact that this will add size to the console. It's not the end of the world.
People really need to think of this as a sort of nunchuk attachment for the 3DS. It simply adds extra functionality for some games. This is not a bad thing! Of course it's not as elegant as having it all built-in from the start, but honestly, it's okay. Remember the six-button Genesis controller? Remember the PlayStation DualShock? What happened when those were released? Ohh yeah, they made the games better!
What I dislike most about people's reactions is that Nintendo's going out on a limb here to make their product even better for everyone rather than just simply being stubborn and sticking to the original design and telling you to like it, which is a somewhat rare thing for large companies to do (I still can't right-click on a Mac after how many years??), and yet everyone's hating on it.
(I still can't right-click on a Mac after how many years??)
Except that, you know, you can. They just don't call it right-click.
(off-topic but you were asking for it)
None of those examples that you gave looked like a horrific Frankenstein-like experiment gone wrong. With this, the 3DS is no longer portable, plain and simple.
