It happens all the time - the most recent example I saw of something like that was Dishonored GOTY eidtion. It was released on consoles nearly 2 or 3 weeks before actual release date. The game will be released this friday, so it's not that surprising.

they've done it before with other games — they may have it on the shelves, but they're probably unable to sell it yet. they've got restrictions in place that won't allow stuff to ring in the register until its street date or something iirc.
