Cave Story, Doukutsu Monogatari as it was originally called, started as a freeware title developed and released on 2004 by one man who goes by the name of "Pixel". The Game was basically a Metroidvania game centered around the MC who wakes up in a mysterious floating island inhabited by anthropomorphic rabbits and must save it from an evil doctor. The game since then has acquired a large following and later officially ported to various game consoles such as the Wii, DSi, PC and 3DS.
Okay, with the eshop release of one of the best platforming game coming in a couple of hours, we have had five official versions of the game so far in a span of 8 years. This particular release has the contents of the steam release which adds a couple of new areas omitted from the original release, and with the inclusion of stereoscopic 3D added in with the sprites and Wide screen output, this looks to be the definitive version yet. Whether or not this will be an incentive to attract those who already played the game one thing is for sure, it is still the same game and a very well made one that is. Also as a warning, the Curly mode in this version appears to have a glitch where in your character falls in an infinite loop as if the floor was omitted from the programming. A current patch for this issue has not been addressed as of late.
There is still no incentive for me to upgrade from the free version.

This is getting sad. I have 3 different versions and refuse to give them any more money. Yes, it was a GREAT game, but I just wish they'd stop cashing out, unless they choose to do so by making a sequel. I'd buy that.

Played the Port up to the Grasslands and I have to say the zoomed out view plus the 3D layered effects give a little more "oomph" to the visuals. Just a quick observation but the sprites themselves are in original res, but the mugshots are taken from the Wiiware version. Surprised to see that I'm actually enjoying it more than I did when I played it on the DSi or PC, though maybe its been over a year since I last touched the game. Haven't really gotten the Best ending, maybe this should be the right time to do so.
To those who haven't bought the game yet if there are any this version is highly recommended.
Ugh, Cave Story 3D looks so awful — completely loses the game's charm. No idea why Nicalis thought that was a good idea apart from an excuse to sell the game for $40, although I suppose that's reason enough.
There is still no incentive for me to upgrade from the free version.

Cave Story 3D has a Prinny Suit. Even if the game lost its charm, it gained another.

It's probably broken, and you'll probably have to wait (forever) for the eventual European release for it to get fixed.
