I didn't, but you're spot on. It's the same situation with the 3D Mario and Zelda games.

The 3D games were always designed and marketed to be main entries in the series, they didn't "start out" as a spinoff. They were intended to be next gen successors in a new environment and made every attempt to apply the core formula to it. The 3D games have been treated as one half of the same whole, not as a child series removed from the core experience as a spinoff is.

If the 3D games hadn't been met with such critical acclaim, then Nintendo would have quickly gone back to the tried and true 2D perspective and the SM64 and OoT would have been demoted to Zelda CD-i status. The gameplay was a spin-off to their previous works.

So they kinda started off as spin offs and were so popular they became main series.

Exactly, 2D Mario and Zelda games were still being made for the GBC & GBA while Nintendo were using the consoles to try different things

...
You mean the same games for GB and GBA that were already made on Nes and Snes and were just ported!!
Seriously, GB and Gba had nothing new but spin-off's. Only Zelda had one "main" game called Minish Cap. Which is based off Toon Link from the WW spin-off... Ooooh.

Just because its 3D and on a home console doesn't mean it's a spin-off. No new 2D Zelda's and Mario's of LttP and and Super Mario Bros. 3 caliber were being made anymore, because of giving LttP a 1-Up into 3D Zelda's new Oot's succession, giving Nintendo a green light to making more diverse, open games. Mario 64 and Metroid Prime for example.
Ugh...

Never said the Mario games weren't ports, but they were touched up and released nonetheless, portability is a good incentive to buy. There was also Super Mario Bros Deluxe and Link's Awakening on the GBC, yes ports/updates, but also the Oracle games, completely new entries into the main series (all released after OoT I might add). Mario 64 deviated from its predecessors by requiring the player to meet certain requirements to finish a level and progress through the game instead of having the player move from point A to point B. Koopas and Goombas (and others) weren't obstacles like they were in the 2D games, just a distraction from what the environment was trying to do to you. That it was enjoyed enough to warrant several sequels elevated it to the main series. But there is a reason why people differentiate between the 2D and 3D games instead of just referring to them as Mario games.

MrGawain

Did anyone else notice this was missing from Ninty's E3 coverage?

Avoiding negative press maybe?

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Grumblevolcano

@MrGawain Maybe and the only reason Color Splash was shown off is it's the only thing Wii U fans have to look forward to after next week until Zelda in TBA 2017.

On the topic of this game, I don't know why they won't release this game already and get it out of the way instead of dragging its release date out seeing as many people don't want it.

So, you want them to release a game that's still likely undergoing some bug testing early, to royally tick off MORE people, including the ones willing to give it a chance?

Selfish, isn't it? Never mind the people who want to play it and deserve a functioning game.

Bolt_Strike

@shaneoh So is BotW then a spinoff of Zelda for deviating from its predecessors by overhauling the item system and changing the way you explore and interact with the game world? Because that game is sure having the same impact on the Zelda series that the 3D games had back in the 90's. Formulas change, they're not necessarily spinoffs for not faithfully reproducing everything that past games have done.

Anyway, more on topic, I think the reason why Federation Force wasn't shown is a combination of bad press and not having anything new to show. Every time they show off something of this game it gets torn to shreds by the fanbase, so if they don't have another selling point to show off for this game then it'll do more harm than good for them to show more of the game.

As crazy as it sounds, there are people who don't play the Zelda games. As for me, I do want the new Zelda game, but I couldn't care less about color splash, though.

Yeah, but those two games are kinda opposite spectrum of Nintendo, if you don't like either then it is unlikely that Nintendo can satisfy you enough to own a Nintendo console.

My interest in this game would instantly skyrocket if NoA were to announce a bundle with a black, normal sized New 3DS. Make the faceplates Metroid series focused, not Federation Force labeled. Or just a generalized space theme, whatever. Then guess what? Day one purchase from not only me, but many Nintendo fans in NA that have been waiting for a normal black New 3DS.

What if you don't like RPGs? Then you won't really be satisfied with either game and not because they don't like Nintendo games, the genre variety just isn't there to appeal to everyone.

@Bolt_Strike If you don't like RPGs then the drought goes even further back. Namely there being nothing to look forward to after Star Fox Zero unless you like the Mario & Sonic Olympics games.

What if someone say, really likes F-Zero? Or Advance Wars? Or Pikmin? But doesn't like Metroid, Paper Mario or Zelda? They could easily decide to buy a Nintendo system, but might be less excited for these games. Those people exist somewhere.

Personally, I don't care for Federation Force, don't care for Color Splash and think the new Zelda looks amazing. So nothing for me till March then.

So, I was searching a swedish online store for the Zero Suit Samus Amiibo, in the search result I saw Metroid Prime: Federation Force, but there was also a match for a title "Metroid 3DS 2016", it had a different catalogue number. I am guessing this is a goof, but it made me a bit curious to see if anyone else has seen or heard any rumors of this? I guess my hope for a proper new Metroid is making me a bit crazy.

I am error, my brother is bug.

And the only one of those titles that has seen a release this gen is Pikmin.

@Bolt_Strike Zelda is more of an Action Adventure game with RPG elements while Paper Mario Color Splash is a RPG Card Battling game.

@CM30 F-Zero, not on this generation. Advance Wars, not on this generation. Pikmin had 1 game on Wii U and if that was enough to sell you on a Wii U, then wouldn't you be satisfied with your purchase already? If it wasn't then what else made you buy a Wii U and why are you not satisfied?

They're still both RPGs though, so that's not really variety. You need at least 3 or 4 different genres to have variety.

@Bolt_Strike In your opinion. I don't count Zelda as a RPG, if you did you would have to count almost every game as a RPG. The conversation was about variety, the conversation was about someone not liking Zelda and Paper Mario Color Splash, two big games from Nintendo (Color Splash is semi-big while Zelda is HUGE) so Nintendo doesn't have anything for them. I said nothing about variety. I only commented about how those two games are pretty vastly different and if you don't like both then Wii U probably isn't the right console for you. I said nothing of variety.
