I still hate the art style and am pretty bitter that Nintendo felt the need to chibify one of their only "mature" looking franchises.

BUT, the game seems like it'll be fun with others, so I'll be getting it.

It's 10 years too late to complain about Wind Waker now On the bright side the next Metroid game will over do it in grit if Ninty listens to the response of FF.

I'm kinda surprised at the calm reaction to the FF segment in the Direct. No backlash. No rants. No petitions. That's very surprising.
I think my interest in the game went up a notch. A single player more will seal the deal for me!

Well Nintendo blocked off complaining, the videos have no like/dislike option.

The game actually looks better (graphics wise) if you watch the trailer on the 3DS (through the eshop), which makes sense since it was designed for a small screen. It looks jaggie as hell when blown up on my PC screen.

Personally, my interest went up with this video. However, it depends on whether or not the game can be played in a single player mode with AI for the other squad members. I have zero interest in playing online multi-player.

Man.....poor Bill and Tanabe-San. their faces were not that happy when trying to announce this game.

Now I don't know whether I should get this game or not and no, its not because they were tiny and what not but because of how the game is clearly focused on multiplayer rather than Single player because it looks like its gonna be like Splatoon where the Single player is the basics of the game and multiplayer is the core part of the game.

Now while this game may not appeal to me that much, I'm still sorry that Nintendo themselves were struggling to announce the game for the direct. You can clearly see their faces that they didn't look at all happy and that's upsetting because, you should never feel down for something that isn't doing well even in the case of SEGA ( I get angry at them because they can't make promises of making solid Sonic games and the many IP's that I want from them so that's why I crib on them a lot.)

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I noticed that! That's hilarious. Did they do that after noticing it was still unpopular? Or are they just assuming people are gonna hate it so they just don't want to know?

I don't know if I feel bad for them or not. On the one hand it must be incredibly annoying to have so much negativity from the second you announce something. On the other hand, when you know people love a particular series and have been waiting for a new game for nearly 10 years (ignoring other M), it is a bit annoying to fans that you'd use that name for a spin-off. If they'd either just released a proper Metroid game or just not used the name, it'd be fine.

I wonder what would've got the biggest proportion of downvotes. This or the fem-ghostbusters trailer?

@Dezzy: I don't know when it happened but another thing to notice is they didn't even upload the Paper Mario Color Splash trailer but uploaded everything else. Federation Force and the return of Paper Mario looking like Sticker Star 2 looks like the big backlashes.

Well I'm either lucky or unlucky in that I haven't played Paper Mario games at all.
A 2D Metroid on the other hand, I would've gobbled right up.

To me, Nintendo is just stubborn and refuses to acknowledge when they have made a mistake. They ignored all the backlash from Other M and seems that they are doing the same this time around. This will be the first Metroid game that I will not be purchasing.

So the new addition to make this FPS stand out is... Call of Duty perks... yay.

They don't really have enough experience with massively disappointing people! So they haven't figured out a good way to respond to it.
A good way to approach experimental games like this would surely be to reveal the concept in the very early stages, maybe just make a 1 min gameplay video, and then if the reaction is like 90% negative, you still have time to change things.

I maintain that the only real problem I have with this game is it wasn't a simultaneous reveal with another Metroid game.

nothing this game does could be a worse creative decision than the decision of going this long without a new Metroid game

though I do wonder if people were this angry when instead of a follow-up to Mario 64, N64 got a ton of Mario spinoff titles

The game itself isn't the problem, therefore I don't understand the backlash. If I had a 3DS, I'd pick this up. The problem is Nintendo; They are the one that should've started development on a main series Metroid game or Prime game 5 years ago. We would've had one by now.

@kkslider5552000: As far as I can remember, back in the day the MArio spin offs were welcomed because they were good quality and did interesting things. In the case of tennis and golf they used the transfer pak with gbc. Mario party running to 3 iterations on '64 shows how popular it was. SB was new and shook up the fighting genre. Paper mario was a sort of sequel to mario rpg but had a new look. Also (like today) there was the usual Nintendo software drought so I suppose that made these games more appealing too! To me, most of the titles kind of make sense. i suppose they would say that this metroid is a similar thing. Put the characters of that universe in a slightly different situation let them play blastball. I find it unappealing though and it all feels rather cheap.

Whydoievenbother

@kkslider5552000: The difference with the Mario spinoffs is that they already had a main series Mario game on the system. We don't have a new Metroid on Wii U or 3DS though.

Well because in a world of fixed resources, the budget for this is inevitably coming out of the budget of a hypothetical alternative that people would've preferred. When they know that people love both the 2D Metroids and the standard 3D Primes, and we've had neither for a decade, you do have to wonder how they came to this decision.
For saying Nintendo have the reputation of just endlessly repeating the same formula with their core franchises, it's weird that they seem so determined not to do that with Metroid. Personally I'm a fan of endlessly repeating the same formula. Experimentation should happen as well as that. Not instead of it.

See, I understand this analogy, but it doesn't quite fit.

No one was worried about Mario's future. They knew there'd be more games like Mario 64. So all the spinoffs were welcomed. But if there was no game like Mario 64 for 8-10 years and then the next thing they showed off was Mario Party, then yeah it'd be a similar reaction. Or, to be closer to your analogy, if we had gotten Prime 4 or a 2D Metroid earlier in this gen's life cycle, people wouldn't be so hard on Federation Force because we'd gotten what we'd wanted.

They already tried the big budget format for Metroid with Other M. And it was a big commercial failure. And it had nothing to do with the quality of the game. The name Metroid just doesn't sell. Federation force will flop and will definitiley put the series on an eternal hiatus. The good news is they're rushing the release to stop monopolizing Next Level with this game and make them work on a better franchise with an actual future and potential.
