Okay, this is not a problem. This issue does notting but annoy me. My 3DS (Aqua model from 2011) started yesterday or the day befor, to not turn of the orange light. I can see when its finished when I play (the charge icon starts blinking when its done)
It never turns off anymore or only when the cable is in ?
Be careful to double check to make sure it's not charging anymore, if for some reason the 3DS or battery keeps on charging regardless of battery status, extreme temperatures and fire can be a result...
Well I know that it blinks orange when there is a friend online, I've never really a problem where it doesn't stop...strange.

if that's in the notification light, leave it alone for a while something caused a short circuit(probably water or something like it, maybe saliva? did you blow on the R button?)
if it's the charger light things are serious there's some kind of bad contact that's dangerous and the battery can even catch fire if you're not careful.

It just means your battery is full and you're overloading it.
You cannot overload a lithium ion battery. (Well you can but if you do then it will set on fire. The charging circuit stops it being possible and it has to work perfectly for obvious reasons).

Well, you are more correct than you give yourself credit for. The rechargeable systems are actually self regulating, they don't need extra hardware to stop the charging. Once the balance of ion is shifted completely one way, no more ion can moved from the positive to the negative plate, essentially stopping the circuit completely. However, the system itself needs to know where to draw power from, if it cannot then it will overload other circuits, generating heat, which will cause a "melt down," basically. If the metal content of the circuitry melts then shorts will fire up throughout the unit and any flammable material will be subjected to extreme heat and sparks as a result.
Basically, it's all complicated technical stuff. But you are correct, you cannot overload a lithium ion battery itself.
