PixelJunk Scrappers Deluxe (Switch eShop)
PixelJunk Scrappers Deluxe is a good, fairly unique idea with several interesting challenges to juggle, and, if you enjoyed the original, the expanded worlds and new additions will fulfill your craving for more recycling action. Clever though it is in premise and arrangement, however, it isn’t a very thrilling single-player game until around halfway through. If you do decide to give it a spin, you want to be online-ready, because multiplayer is where its engineering comes to the fore.
Venba (Switch eShop)
In Venba’s short play time, the narrative-led cooking game conveys so much of this family’s experience. The stirring story is presented in snackable chapters, each with an emotional tale tied to a dish. The puzzles aren’t too challenging, making for a comforting, cosy playthrough as you prepare each meal. Be warned though: this game will make you hungry. And it may also make you cry.
Backbeat (Switch eShop)
Backbeat stands out among puzzle games for its attractive graphics and constantly pulsing, funky soundscape, but most of all for its impressive depth of mechanics. Juggling phrase lengths, bar markers, alignment, stagger, solos, and special moves – all in interactive levels full of moving parts – is like having a wah-wah pedal hooked up to your brain. Apart from a sometimes-fiddly interface and limited replayability, Ichigoichie hits all the right notes.
Patrick's Parabox (Switch eShop)
Patrick's Parabox is the rare game that's both highly challenging and highly approachable in equal measure without once dropping a beat. This is a must-play for fans of the genre — especially more logic-driven puzzlers like Baba Is You. Even if you're not the most hardened puzzle veteran, Patrick's Parabox does a great job of teaching you to solve even its most difficult puzzles thanks to a clever level structure and approachable progression system.
Super Adventure Hand (Switch eShop)
We’ve got to hand it to Devm Games (Moving Out) for coming up with the concept. Super Adventure Hand is a joyous, eccentric platformer that’s not quite like anything you’ve played before. Though the controls can occasionally be frustrating, that’s also the point of this brief, uncannily gripping experience.
Raindrop Sprinters (Switch eShop)
Raindrop Sprinters is as pure an arcade experience as one could wish for, its base simplicity underpinned by a deep scoring game that can be approached in a variety of ways, ultimately presenting a bottomless reflex-based affair that will wash out the impatient and reward the dedicated in a shower of euphoria. It’s not a game for everyone and will hold little appeal or longevity for the vast majority, but it does what it does well, and its construction is a little bit clever. When you reach that moment of dodging zen, where you’re weaving those drops against impossible odds, you run a real risk of just-one-more-go addiction.
Onion Assault (Switch eShop)
Onion Assault is a worthy purchase if you're looking for a short, breezy platformer that pays homage to an off-the-wall Nintendo classic. While there are some annoyances sprinkled throughout — some imprecise platforming, finicky physics, and repeated visual assets — there's enough here to provide a couple of hours' worth of enjoyment, at least; maybe a bit more if you're looking to grab all of the collectible coins. Onion Assault may not prove as memorable as the developer's previous games, but it's worth playing nonetheless.
The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo (Switch eShop)
The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo is a standout title in its commitment to presenting spectacular, surrealist animation. Granted, the playtime is short, the interaction is limited, and the puzzles are obtuse, but fortunately, the animation and music are good enough to distract you from those facts and provide an hour or two of great entertainment.

Strayed Lights (Switch eShop)
Strayed Lights is something rare in the gaming industry; a game that genuinely surprises us. There's no doubt that the performance isn't quite up to scratch on the Switch, however, the combat is unique and accessible, the story is told in a subtle, heartfelt way, and the music and visuals are stunning.
Gal Guardians: Demon Purge (Switch)
For Metroidvania fans and lovers of Inti Creates' works, Gal Guardians certainly does enough to please. Getting to grips with combat negotiations and levelling up your weaponry brings with it a sense of reward and progression, and it’s enjoyable to backtrack for secrets. It’s not quite on the level of Curse of the Moon, its closest relative, but it’s not far off — and the sibling switching idea is at least novel and fun to work with. Gory, spritely, and occasionally creatively inspired, it hits all the right notes, just sometimes in a little too sparse a manner to be considered overwhelmingly compelling.
Blanc (Switch eShop)
Blanc is a pleasant, easygoing co-op experience that will provide a couple of hours' worth of enjoyment along with a few frustrations. The camera can be a bit messy at times due to the two-player setup, and the game could definitely do with a hint system in some areas, as we imagine children in particular would struggle with the overall lack of direction. That said, it's a lovely-looking game and an entirely inoffensive experience that anyone can pick up and enjoy with little fuss. If you're looking for a new, emotionally driven co-op game, then Blanc is an easy recommendation.
Let us know below which of the games above you've played and enjoyed, and if there's something else from 2023 that you feel deserves a shoutout, then don't keep it to yourself.

Honestly, I think the best hidden gem this year is a game called “Punch a Bunch”
It’s a really fun physics-based boxing game that has literally no discourse surrounding it
That's a good list; I own a couple and played demos of several more and they're all fun.
I especially liked gunbrella and gal guardians (though I hate that they changed the name to add 'gal'). Those 2 both have demos I would suggest to anyone to try.
Although not a hidden gem, for under-rated I would pick Bayonetta Origins since it is a spectacular game which everyone seems to have forgot existed 2 minutes after release. It's also one of those rare games where user review scores tend to be quite a lot higher than professional review scores.
I really enjoyed Akka Arrh! FYI, the regular version is just a USD$20 download, I didn't realize there was a special edition, for (cough) around 50.
I would describe Akka Arrh as a "relaxation & trance-inducing game for ADHD people..." ha ha. Try it sometime!
Can anyone help me ... have you guys ever played like an indie 2D platformer / run & gun that had an pixel-art style where you started like some Conan-era style dudes and levels and then they went evolving until it was kind of sci-fi? It wasn't Contra btw.
It was coop so it was actually really fun. I think it must have been a 2018-2019 indie but for the love of everything I can't find the name or the game anywhere.
Brotato was my goty. Highly rated on Steam, sold well on the eshop but wasn't reviewed on this site.
@Yoshif3 I’d suggest going to r/tipofmytounge for that, those people usually can help you finding things you vaguely remember
@Yoshif3 is this it my friend,
Oniken: Unstoppable Edition & Odallus: The Dark Call Bundle
For the best underrated game this year I'm going for Bayonetta Origins (as well), absolutely gorgeous art style and some fun gameplay. Story was actually pretty decent and impactful and better yet some lore on Cereza for those invested in the world and story of Bayonetta. I went into the game not expecting much but ended up being a 9/10 game for me.
@UltimateOtaku91 Thanks friend...shame that those are not it... sorry, it was more like pixel-art than retro 8bit... but those recommendations look pretty fun too. Thanks!
And I agree... I haven't finished Bayonetta Origins but its been a little pretty underrated gem. I'm a sucker for that IP so I'm really invested in the lore... I have to get through it but I enjoyed what I have played. Such a shame that the game was dismissed by fans because it radically changed its genre.
@DiamondCore thanks, I'll visit it and see if I can find the game. I remember it was a fun indie hidden gem and a great co-op experience.
@Yoshif3 Hmm I wonder what that game was then I want to know myself now lol maybe check this list out might be on here
https://www.nintendolife.com/guides/best-pixel-art-switch-games?page=
Blazing Chrome maybe?
@Yoshif3 is it possible it was Broforce?
Gal Guardians and Gunbrella are both solid retro game and Venba is a solid story game, though very short. And Karateka is a game every gaming historian needs to experience. The other games I played on this list were just sort of ok, to be honest. This is one of those years that, for the most part, good games got a good amount of attention.
I feel like Belle Boomerang deserves to be in this list. I personally enjoyed it more than anything on this list and it feels like a deep cut with how few people talked about it this year.
Curse Crackers
Gravity Circuit
Prison City
@UltimateOtaku91 Actually I checked that list to look for it 😆🥲
But no… it isn’t Blazing Chrome… the characters were smaller and the pixel art was more akin to things like Two Crowns or Sword&Sorcery … it was more “artsy” let’s say.
If I know which one is it I’ll let you know.
@nemecek_f thanks… but no it isn’t that one… but Broforce is awesome… fun chaotic coop too 😛
Yay! Raindrop Sprinters!
@Lone_Beagle Akka Arrh is AWESOME.
Curse Crackers, Gravity Circuit, and Akka Arrh on Switch. Black Skylands elsewhere.
Oh, also Vernal Edge. Incredible game. Like if Treasure made Skies of Arcadia on the Saturn.
@Yoshif3 I wanna try!
Was it Super Time Force Ultra? It's by the same team who did Sword & Sworcery though I don't think it got ported to Switch, unfortunately.
UFO and it isn't close. It fell basically through the cracks despite being easily my second favorite game after TOTK. Also onion assault is overrated if anything, and your review of 7/10 was frankly generous.
@PineappleLake I have definitely owned that for at least two years, it did not come out this year.
@Yoshif3 Caveman Warriors?
@TheDanma @acridskull @UltimateOtaku91 @nemecek_f haha thanks everyone. Sadly its not any of those ... I tried searching for it as an action platformer instead... but to no avail.
I guess it will live on in my memories now.
For me airport hero hanaeda. Niche game but enjoyed on 3ds and delivers on switch. Also the superstars version that released a month ago on Play Asia is even better
@LikelySatan Vernal Edge is that good? Saw that PID offers a bundle with it and Gravity Circuit on Steam, so I figured it probably would be solid if they're offering it alongside such an excellent game, but now I'm more interested
astlibra revision.
@Yoshif3 It might be Cybarian: The Time Traveling Warrior. Barbarian. Time travel. It all fits.
@TechRat bingo! Barbarian was the keyword! Thanks! Cybarian looks fun too, I’ll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.
@TheDanma @acridskull @UltimateOtaku91 @nemecek_f the game is called Tiny Barbarians DX. It wasn’t run & gun but instead an action platformer. It’s a 2017 game and it’s quite fun for a couch co-op session. A little gem from a few years ago.
Here’s a weird trailer: https://youtu.be/l7UHqeIU1jE?si=sTMS1CEZNr_Y-Iz1
And NL’s review: https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/tiny_barbarian_dx
It’s more fun than the trailer though XD
Thanks for the help and happy holidays everyone!
It's always hard to say what qualifies as 'hidden' but a couple of my favourites from this year which haven't been reviewed on this site as of yet are Wildfrost (roguelite deck builder) and ghostpia Season One (visual novel).
@Yoshif3 I’m quite happy your saga in this comments section had a happy ending. It was fun and frustrating watching other people make the same suggestions I was going to and then be wrong. 😅
Gravity Circuit is the kind of Megaman-esque game I've dreamed about for years. I'd recommend anyone who likes them, particularly the Zero games, to give it a shot.
@PikaPhantom it's very, very good. I keep forgetting to get it on a cart. Yes. Pick it up.
I would say that this was kind of a good year for indies, even though I wasn't as impressed with it compared to last year. Regardless, while I would say that Grim Guardians: Demon Purge is the highlight from this list, I wouldn't scoff at others like Onion Assault and Gravity Circuit. Just my opinion, though.
It’s not quite on the level of Curse of the Moon, its closest relative
Er...I would argue that I enjoyed Grim Guardians: Demon Purge more than Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (and especially its sequel, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2). The latter was a neat little game of sorts to warm us up for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (which I liked) and a nice nod to the classic Castlevania games, but when it comes to overall depth and polish to the gameplay and pretty much everything else, Grim Guardians wins the day for me.
By far the most underrated Switch game of 2023 for me was Astral Ascent. It's a roguelite that reviewers repeatedly (and rightly) placed alongside the greats like Dead Cells / Hades. Combat is smooth and responsive, with just the right level of challenge and progress. The different characters actually play quite differently, and have interesting backstories and varied dialogue with the various NPCs as you progress.
I think the fact that Astral Ascent was a stealth drop during a busy time caused it to be overlooked by most, but man... that game is good. Fans of the genre should absolutely not miss out.
Also, while not quite as top tier as Astral Ascent, Backpack Hero is a solid game that deserved more attention than it got. This one is for the Slay the Spire fans, since its gameplay scratches a similar itch. Great stuff, all around.
C'mon, no Paranormasight?
@TotalHenshin haha thanks man. I gotta try some games on this list but I had a flashback of that game and wanted to replay it. I can recommend it on a sale.
It's really not fair how little attention Fuga: Melodies of Steel and its sequel got on this website. They're from a cult franchise and a respected developer and are both amazing RPGs
@Yoshif3 I'm glad you found the game in the end and was fun whilst it lasted 😄, also you have some other game suggestions to check out in the future.
BROK the InvestiGator has an "Overwhelmingly Positive" user score on Steam. The highest possible rating.
So I just picked it up!
Not feeling true love of the term ‘hidden gem’ in this article. Some almost lukewarm write-ups for a lane of gaming you can get real evocative and passionate on
For deck building enthusiasts, Fights in Tight Spaces, Wild Frost & Cobalt Core are all great gems slipped somewhat under the radar.
Also Gravity Circuit, and also for fans of that, 30xx
Already had most of them on my Deku List wishlist - now I've added the ones that were somehow missing from it based on this list and several suggestions here in the comments - and have already bought Raindrop Sprinters even though I haven't tried it yet!
@fenlix Most likely it isn't here because it's already included in the Nintendo Life GOTY staff awards (https://www.nintendolife.com/features/game-of-the-year-2023-nintendo-life-staff-awards), although I can see where you're coming from considering how unfortunately overlooked that game seems to be!
Wow, my game "Raindrop Sprinters" was chosen!
I'm so happy to get recognition for the first consumer game I made, and to have it featured three times in Nintendo Life! It was worth all the hard work I put into making it.
I'm having a winter sale right now, 30% off until January 8 (GMT+9). Please play it during your New Year's holidays!
We will also be updating the game with the same content as the Steam version in the near future. Stay tuned!

Patrick's Parabox is great, but if you've even seen any of my recent comments on here you know Gravity Circuit is my pick. 10/10 game
Meh, most of those are too niche and too indie for my liking. The actually underrated Switch releases would include Bayo Origins, FE Engage, Rain Code and DQ Monsters.
