Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

Damien’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

  • Review Art of Fighting 2 (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

    Garcia is back

The original Art of Fighting may not have threatened Street Fighter II in terms of gameplay but it certainly turned a few heads and stole some of the trade away from Capcom’s seminal 2D fighter. This second game takes the core concept of the first title and gently refines several aspects to create a far more enjoyable (but sadly...

  • RUMOUR PopCap Games To Develop For WiiWare?

Ok, so this is probably a bit of idle speculation on our part but looking at a recent interview with PopCap Games we get the impression that the talented developer – which has such hits as Peggle Extreme and Zuma under its belt – may be looking into producing WiiWare games.

CEO Dave Roberts and co-founder John Vechey stated that they were...

  • News Microsoft Befuddled by WiiWare

Microsoft's Chris Satchell must be an easily confused guy, because he’s recently gone on record to state that he’s downright stumped by Nintendo’s WiiWare service and the strategy the company is employing when it comes to nurturing developers.

Satchell, who is general manager of Microsoft’s game developer group, unsurprisingly believes that...

  • News N64 Controller Mod For Virtual Console

Although the Classic Controller is enough for most retro-loving Wii owners, there are some that crave a rather more authentic experience. There’s nothing like experiencing Virtual Console games on the controllers they were intended to be played on, and while Nintendo’s limited production of the Club Nintendo SNES pad will have satisfied a few, it’s going to leave a certain demographic out in the cold – namely those who love the N64 controller.

But fear not. A talented hacker called Raphaël Assénat and been tink...

  • Review Fatal Fury 2 (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

    Street Fighter 2 it ain't

Although the original Fatal Fury was undoubtedly one of the best challengers to square up to Capcom’s Street Fighter 2, many would argue that SNK’s franchise didn’t really get into its stride until the sequel was released. Improving on the first title in practically every way possible, Fatal Fury 2 was one of the...

  • News Otakugate – The Saga Continues

We only reported a few hours ago that Nintendo of Europe’s Managing Director Laurent Fischer’s recent ‘Geeks and Otaku’ comment had caused God of War creator David Jaffe a certain amount of annoyance, and if the news we’ve just received is anything to go by, it would appear that Jaffe’s subsequent tirade has worked. Fischer has issued an apology, which runs as follows:

I have huge respect for those who, like me, share a common passion for Nintendo and want to make it clear that I would never use and I didn’t use this terminology in such a context or way to cause offence. I re...

  • News David Jaffe Personally Insulted By Nintendo's 'Geeks And Otaku' Comment

Did this news story annoy you? Of course it did. It also annoyed God of War creator David Jaffe, who went as far as to post a cutting reply on his blog page.
