Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Timeline

  • 2010: Co-founds Hookshot Media, assuming the role of Editorial Director
  • 2012: Editor of Nintendo Life
  • 2022: Editor of Time Extension

Qualifications & Awards

  • BA (Hons) Multimedia Design (2002)

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

Damien’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

  • News EU WiiWare Releases 13th June: Spare Some Change, Squire?

As you’ve probably noticed by now, there are no WiiWare releases for Europe this week. It seems that Nintendo feels you’ll have more than enough to keep you busy with the 5 Virtual Console games that came out today.

Or perhaps the Japanese giant believes that the stunning news that Super Mario RPG is coming to the Virtual Console will be enough...

  • News Nyko Wireless Nunchuk - OBJECTION!

Nintendo isn't best pleased with "rip-off" design

We covered Nyko’s innovative wireless Nunchuk controller in a news piece some time ago and were generally pleased by the fact that a peripheral manufacturer had decided to fix one of the key problems with the Wii’s control setup – the pesky wire that keeps hitting you in the face as you...

  • Review Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Virtual Console / Master System)

In Miracle World you'll have to contend with the evil Janken the Great, who will send his henchmen and monsters at you to thwart your progress.

Following the incredible success of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros series, Sega decided that it too needed a platform game with an identifiable mascot. The result was Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which...

  • News Xiotex Amazed By Reaction To WiiWare Rebuttal

Xiotex - the small indie developer that was the focus of our rather shocking news story recently – has posted another entry on its/his blog page regarding this sorry state of affairs. It would appear that the tiny devco didn't expect the original blog post to cause such a kerfuffle.

When I started the ‘WiiWare is a lie’ blog post I had no idea...

  • News Big Blue Bubble Interview - Home Sweet Home

Home decorating simulator Home Sweet Home is Big Blue Bubble's first title for Nintendo's WiiWare service. Keen to know a little more about this interesting title, we got in touch with the developer's CEO Damir Slogar, and asked him a few questions.

WiiWare World: Could you give us a brief history of your studio? What other notable projects have you...

  • News Wii Fit Inspires New YouTube Craze

And it’s one that we most certainly approve of

It may be harder to find than rocking horse shit these days, but Wit Fit is nevertheless causing quite a stir in living rooms all over the world. It seems that the fairer sex simply can’t get enough of it, and as if to illustrate this fact there’s been a flood of clips cropping up on YouTube...

  • News Nintendo: "Hard Drives Are For Geeks"

If you asked the average Wii owner what they wanted most of all from life, a large percentage would probably say something like “heaps of cash” or “a naked mud fight with Angelina Jolie”, but there’s a chance many would also say “a Goddamn hard drive to store all my Virtual Console and WiiWare games on, please” before ranting and raving about how much Nintendo is screwing them over.

If you consider yourself to be one of those people then for the sake of your sanity (and possibly your crockery) please look away now, because Nintendo’s European Managing Director of Marketing La...

  • News Luc Bernard Talks Eternity's Child, Rose Princess and Uwe Boll

Luc Bernard’s Eternity’s Child has been on the WiiWare radar for some time now thanks to its gorgeous visuals and unique setting, so many people were surprised when the talented Anglo-French developer was interviewed recently and publicly stated that he was disappointed with his work.

We got in touch with this enigmatic young gent and asked him...

  • News Nintendo Working On USB Devices – HDD Possible?

The job spec is as follows: CONTRACT - Software/Hardware Tester Description of Duties Creating and executing a test plan for Wii’s USB devices Executing test plans with...

  • News EU WiiWare Update: Actionloop Twist

Just one EU WiiWare release this week, and it’s the neat little puzzler Actionloop Twist (known in North America as Magnetica Twist).

Originally developed in 1998 by Mitchell Corporation (the guys who did Pang), Actionloop also goes by the name Puzzloop in Japan and has been copied under the name Zuma. So, chances are, you've probably played this...

  • News Nintendo Barring Small Developers From WiiWare?

    Wait a minute...

Remember when Nintendo announced WiiWare? Do you recall the grand spiel? WiiWare is a platform for small developers to really get their products out there and truly shine, you don’t need to be a big studio, yadda, yadda, yadda. Of course you do. It’s for this reason that many people got excited about the service; after all,...

  • News North American WiiWare Top 10

Looking at the latest North American WiiWare top 10 it’s plain to see that the all-important ‘Mario effect’ is just as potent as ever.

For those of you that follow the fortunes of the Virtual Console service, you’ll know that Mario games regularly top the sales charts. In fact ‘regularly’ is probably the wrong word; ‘always’ is a...

  • Review Boom Blox (Wii)

Spielberg takes time off from resurrecting Indy to bring us the Wii’s very own version of Jenga

When someone like Steven Spielberg puts his name to a product you know you really should sit up and take notice. The world renowned director of Jurassic Park, ET and countless other films that have made a small fortune at the global box office,...

  • Review Ninja Combat (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

Ninja Combat is a scrolling beat 'em up featuring, as the title suggests, ninjas.

One of the first releases for SNK’s Neo Geo console, Ninja Combat is unsurprisingly a little rough around the edges. Graphically it’s not really a massive leap up from the likes of the SNES or Megadrive/Genesis (bear in mind that when this game was first published...

  • Review Burning Fight (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

    A poor mans Final Fight

In the early days of the Neo-Geo SNK tried its hardest to cover all of the potential money-making bases of arcade and home console gaming. Fatal Fury catered to the one-on-one fighting crowd, NAM 1975 was an Operation Wolf clone with a difference, and Burning Fight clearly looked towards Capcom’s Final Fight for...

  • Review Samurai Shodown (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

    VICTOLY!

SNK became something of a fighting game factory in the early ‘90s, releasing titles like Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury to capitalize on public interest in the genre that had been kick started by a certain 2D fighting title from Cacpom. However, Samurai Showdown (or Samurai Spirits, as it was known in Japan) marked a real change of pace...

  • Feature WiiWare Publishers Lament Release Date Shambles

    Wii Hear You

When WiiWare was first announced Nintendo proclaimed that it would revolutionize the way we buy our videogames. This was more than mere hyperbole; digital distribution undoubtedly allows smaller developers and publishers to get their product to consumers with the minimum of expense. However, it would appear that the process of getting...

  • News Nintendo Channel Finally Comes to Europe

    About time

North American Wii owners have been ‘enjoying’ the pleasures of the Nintendo Channel for some time now, but European (and Aussie) gamers have had to endure a long a protracted wait in order to see what all the fuss is about. Thankfully, that is soon to change as Nintendo has triumphantly announced that new service, which allows you to...

  • News World of Goo WiiWare: Exclusive Online Co-Op

2D Boy’s innovative puzzle title World of Goo has been on our radar for some time now thanks to its lovely visuals and addictive gameplay. As you might be aware the game is also being released for the PC and Mac, but 2D Boy has now confirmed that Wii owners will be getting exclusive online co-op, which makes that version the most appealing of the bunch.

This really is excellent news, not only because World of Goo is ideally suited for this kind of play, but that it bodes well for future releases. The more WiiWare games that showcase online multiplayer, the better! If you’re feeling flush then you can sample the PC-based pre...

  • News Nintendo To Shun 2008 Leipzig Games Convention

"Too busy washing hair" rumour is currently unfounded

It may have attracted 185,000 people last year and now ranks as the number one gaming expo in Europe but Nintendo has today confirmed that it wouldn’t be attending the Leipzig Games Convention 2008. The Japanese giant has commented that events such as road shows and small-scale local events...

  • News Soul Blazer – The Virtual Console Release That Never Was?

During our trips around the wonderful World Wide Web we noticed that a few sites seem to be listing Enix’s excellent Soul Blazer (also know as Soul Blader in Japan) as a Virtual Console title, even going as far as to state that it saw release in North America on the 12th May alongside Konami’s Tiny Toon Adventures. We’ve also had several emails from concerned readers regarding this, too.

A cursory glance at the Virtual Console shop on our American Wii shows that neither Soul Blazer or Tiny Toons are available, so we??...

  • News Hudson Interview - Alien Crush, Bomberman, Tetris, Blue Oasis

Hudson is a company that needs little introduction. One of the first publishers to flock to the legendary NES console, Hudson has continued to be a solid Nintendo supporter and has recently opened its WiiWare account with the enjoyable Star Soldier R. Needless to say, the veteran publisher also has several other interesting titles on the horizon.

    Wi...
