Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Timeline

  • 2010: Co-founds Hookshot Media, assuming the role of Editorial Director
  • 2012: Editor of Nintendo Life
  • 2022: Editor of Time Extension

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

Damien’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

Just one WiiWare title to savour this week and it’s the seriously swingin’ puzzle title Groovin’ Blocks, from Empty Clip Studios.

A head-spinning puzzle title with a musical twist, Groovin’ Blocks certainly looks interesting but has this rookie developer gotten off to a winning start? As always, our review will reveal all. The game retails...

  • News USA WiiWare Update: My Aquarium

Is it just us or is something fishy is going on here? Why, it’s Hudson’s My Aquarium, no less!

Euro WiiWare fans got to experience this interesting little ‘game’ not so long ago and we gave it a robust 8/10 review. Before you start throwing sharp objects at us and burning our precious livestock, let it be known that this is one seriously...

  • Review Clu Clu Land (Wii Virtual Console / NES)

    Clu Clu a choo

First, a lesson in linguistics – ‘Kurukuru’ in Japanese means ‘turning around’. Why are we telling you this? Well, it neatly explains Clu Clu Land’s rather unusual title, and also gives some insight into the mechanics of the game. You assume the role of a funny-looking fish called Bubbles, who due to some cruel...

  • News Gradius ReBirth Hitting Japan Next Week

Here’s a pleasant surprise – it only seems like five minutes ago that we were able to announce the development of Gradius ReBirth for WiiWare, and now the game is almost with us!

The 2D shooter will be arriving on the Japanese WiiWare service next Tuesday (alongside Midnight Bowling and what appears to be some kind of Othello variant), which...

  • News EU WiiWare Update: Critter Round-Up & MaBoShi

Europe finally gets chance to sample the ‘delights’ of Konami's Critter Round-Up thanks to this week’s WiiWare update.

Although it’s nice to see EU gamers catching up with their North American counterparts (Critter Round-Up came out in the US in May) it’s a shame that the actual game is so uninspiring. We didn’t think much to it – feel...

  • Review Ys Book I & II (Virtual Console / TurboGrafx-16)

Ys Book I & II chronicles the first adventures of Adol Christin, a young, red-haired swordsman on a quest to unlock the secrets of an ancient kingdom.

Even the most hardened TG16 fan will admit that the machine wasn’t exactly a massive success when it was released in the States. It struggled against the Genesis and SNES despite having some great...

  • News IGA: 2D WiiWare Castlevania Is The Right Approach

WiiWare seems to be a hot bed for retro revivals at the moment, what with Mega Man 9 and Gradius Rebirth already announced for the service. And if a recent interview with Koji ‘IGA’ Igarashi is anything to go by, another highly esteemed franchise might be inbound, too.

IGA is the current producer of Konami’s legendary Castlevania series and he...

  • News USA WiiWare Update: Midnight Pool

This week’s WiiWare release took us by surprise – we knew that Midnight Pool was coming out eventually, but had no idea it would be this soon - very little has been seen or heard about this game. What we do know is that it’s based on Gameloft’s mobile phone version, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on your opinion of mobile phone games!

If you’re a fan of hitting shiny balls with long sticks then this game should hold considerable appeal to you, and at a mere 800 Wii points this may be worth a go even if you’re not. Here’s the press release: Take a trip across America to make your...

  • News A Look Inside The Mega Man Boutique

You'll have to forgive us for going a bit Mega Man crazy here at WiiWare World, but this game has got us seriously excited!

We were having a quick snoop around the Japanese site for the upcoming WiiWare title Mega Man 9 (known as Rockman in Japan) and we happened upon this rather interesting image, which should have fans of the series weeping tears...

Hudson has kindly informed us that its interactive fish tank game My Aquarium is due for release sometime this month.

In order to get you all excited, the company has also produced a new trailer for English-speaking markets. It's down there, below the next paragraph. Are we good to you or what? As you can see the game is set to feature all kinds of...

  • News Luc Bernard Quits Videogame Development

Some rather upsetting news has reached our ears today. Luc Bernard – the creator of WiiWare title Eternity’s Child and a firm friend of the site – has announced via his blog that he is quitting the videogame industry. He will be pursuing a career in graphic novels instead.

Bernard has recently been on the receiving end of some rather bad press...

  • News USA WiiWare Update: Strong Bad Episode One

Rejoice North American Wii owners! One of WiiWare's most eagerly awaited titles is released today. Strong Bad Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner has been on our radar for quite some time now and looks like being one of the finest games on Nintendo’s download service so far.

Based on a side-splittingly hilarious web flash cartoon, Homestar Ruiner is from...

  • News Goldeneye Locked In Legal Limbo

WAAAAY back in the mists of time we reported that Nintendo was looking to bring Rare’s N64 classic Goldeneye to the Virtual Console.

Soon afterwards it became clear that it wasn’t going to happen, and to make matters worse, it looked as if Rare’s new owners might bring the game to their 360 console via the Xbox Live Arcade service, albeit in...

  • News Publishers Remain Tight-Lipped On Black Monday Debacle

Boy, Monday was a real bummer, wasn’t it? There we all were, waiting in feverish expectation for the impending triple-whammy of Mega Man, Ys Book 1 & 2 and Samurai Showdown II, as we had previously been promised by the respective publishers of these games. Then Nintendo pulled the rug from beneath us and released Sonic and Splatterhouse II instead.

Feeling a sense of duty to the legions of Virtual Console fans all over the globe, we decided to get in touch with Capcom, Hudson and SNK Playmore to ascertain what the hell went wrong on ‘Black Monday’. Unsurprisingly, the response so far has been somewhat guarded...

  • News Nintendo Responds To US Release Date Queries

Following Monday’s US Virtual Console release debacle, Nintendo has responded to enquiries about how three different publishers were issuing statements claiming that their games would be coming out on the 4th, only for Nintendo to release two entirely different games instead.

Speaking to GoNintendo, the company had this to say: A number of...

  • News Euro Update: Wild West Guns and Defend Your Castle

Lucky European gamers have been gifted not one but two WiiWare releases today. Hurrah!

Wild West Guns is a neat-looking shooter that attempts to capture the thrills and spills of traditional light gun titles. It reminds us a little of Konami’s crusty old arcade shooter Lethal Enforcers II: Gunfighters – hopefully it’s a bit better! Expect our...

  • News Samurai Shodown II Coming To North American VC In August

  • News Braben: LostWinds Was Almost Cancelled

Frontier Developments maestro David Braben has rained praise on download services like WiiWare, commenting that LostWinds would probably have been cancelled had it been earmarked as a traditional retail release.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton, UK, Braben had this to say: It's a fantastic way of de-risking publishing. This is a game...

  • News Play Eternity’s Child Prequel – For Free!

Not many people seem to be aware that the upcoming WiiWare title Eternity’s Child actually started life as a mobile phone game. It was never officially released but creator Luc Bernard has put it on his site as a free download. What a kindly gent he is.

Eternity's Child: The Lost Chapter (snappy title, eh?) showcases a gorgeous artstyle, with...

  • News Tetris Party To Support The Balance Board

Hudson announced Tetris Party some time ago and although we’d heard rumours of Balance Board compatibility, it hasn’t actually been confirmed until now.

The game is set for release in Autumn (or 'Fall' if you're of the North American persuasion) and will also include online play, 'point and shoot' wiimote control and 18 different games modes, 10...

  • News Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures - WiiWare Bound?

Cracking news, Gromit! Everyone’s favourite plastcine duo are to star in a series of adventures thanks to those kind chaps at Telltale games, and although we’re probably getting ahead of ourselves here, it’s highly likely that the platform for these episodic escapades is going to be WiiWare.

Called Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Adventures, the...

  • News USA VC Update: Chase HQ and Art of Fighting 2

This week’s Virtual Console releases cater nicely for those of you that either enjoy chasing criminals in fast cars or beating the seven shades out of fellow human beings.

First up is Taito’s arcade classic Chase HQ, represented here by the TG-16/PC Engine conversion. Sadly, this isn’t a brilliant port of the coin-op original and even hardcore...

  • News USA WiiWare Update: Pong Toss

If the concept of tossing pongs appeals to you then this week’s WiiWare release will probably have you crying tears of ecstasy. Frat Party Games: Pong Toss (previously known as Beer Pong before Nintendo got a bit moody about the connection with alcohol) is a digital representation of the popular college pastime and certainly looks amusing enough, but as always we will reserve judgment until we’ve actually had chance to sit down with a cool six pack and review it – which should be very shortly.
