Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Timeline

  • 2010: Co-founds Hookshot Media, assuming the role of Editorial Director
  • 2012: Editor of Nintendo Life
  • 2022: Editor of Time Extension

Qualifications & Awards

  • BA (Hons) Multimedia Design (2002)

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

Damien’s Favourite Games

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

  • Talking Point Is Nintendo Ignoring WiiWare?

Before WiiWare became a reality Nintendo was telling everyone that would listen that the service would revolutionise the way people purchase and play video games.

Such was the company’s enthusiasm for the notion of digital distribution, the hype surrounding the launch of WiiWare was almost deafening. It was hard not to get carried away by the...

Hold on to your seats, guys – because today’s exciting WiiWare releases have just been confirmed!

First up we have Planet Pachinko, which might sound like a simulation of the popular Japanese gambling machine but is in fact a zany shooter where you assume the role of a robot looking for its puppy. Aww. At 500 points this could be quite...

  • News iPhone Hit 1112 WiiWare bound?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year or so you’ll be aware that Apple’s iPhone/iPod Touch platform is getting some serious attention from game developers, largely thanks to excellent ‘Apps Store’ distribution method that allows users to download games direct to their devices using a wireless connection with the minimum of fuss. We’ve tried it and it’s all very nifty, although it has to be said that the general quality of the games available is often less than inspiring.

WiiWare gem World of Goo cropped up in a very respectable tenth position, which caused EA’s Peter Moore to scratch his chin in puzzlement and comment that he was ‘surprised’ to see it...

    At the start of...

Essentially a portable version of the WiiWare portal, it will allow DSi owners to download...

  • Review Ninjatown (DS)

The crazy world of Shawnimals comes to life in this excellent take on the 'Tower Defence' genre

Like bread always falling butter-side down and buses coming two at a time, it’s one of life’s universal truths that whenever ninjas are added to something, it becomes infinitely cooler (with the possible exception of the lamentable Ninjabread Man, of...

  • Review Need For Speed: Undercover (DS)

EA attempts to cram a living, breathing city into the DS - the results aren't pretty...

It’s easy to be pessimistic about EA’s Need for Speed franchise. Considering the staggering number of titles to bear the brand name (this is the 12th game since the franchise’s inception in 1994), there have been precious few true classics. However, we...

  • News Man Destroys TV With Wii Remote, Cries For Mama

TV lovers should look away now

The early days of the Wii’s life were dogged by stories of idiots endangering themselves and others by hurling their Wii Remotes around like demented baboons, but since Nintendo pointed out that we should all be using our wrist-straps and graciously provided those all-important rubber covers we’ve heard precious...

  • News Sorry America, You Can’t Have The DSi Until March

Nintendo's latest handheld is still some months away for Western gamers

The DSi’s Japanese launch has been something of a success, with units flying off the shelves almost as fast as they're replenished. You’d assume with such a groundswell of hype surrounding Nintendo’s latest DS hardware revision that a Western release would be pushed...

  • News Hands on with SnakeByte's XS Starter Pack

It’s always struck us as rather strange that Nintendo held off allowing third party manufacturers to produce controllers for the Wii for such a long time. It’s only recently that we’ve seen ‘unofficial’ Wiimotes and Nunchuks hitting the marketplace, and considering the relatively high price of Nintendo’s own brand of peripherals, it’s a welcome move.

SnakeByte – the company behind the Retro Controllers we reviewed recently – has now pushed its own interpretation of Nintendo’s Wiimote and Nunchuk combo onto shop...

  • News USA WiiWare Update: Bruiser & Scratch, Hockey Allstar Shootout

We’ve had our eye on Bruiser and Scratch for some time now – the game was formally announced ages ago – and today it finally sees release as one of today’s WiiWare titles.

Clocking in a 1000 Wii points and featuring more puzzles than you can shake a stick at, Bruiser and Scratch certainly looks interesting – and the fact that it’s...

  • News Bplus Gets The Ball Rolling With Niki – Rock 'n' Ball

Bplus might not have had the most auspicious start to WiiWare publishing, but you have to give this tiny independent developer credit for sticking at it. Today the studio has announced its second WiiWare title, called Niki – Rock 'n' Ball.

Here's the glorious details, straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak: Niki – Rock 'n' Ball is a new...

  • News Eternity’s Child – Still Alive, Coming in 2009

Luc Bernard’s Eternity’s Child is easily one of the most hyped WiiWare releases of all time and despite months of speculation and chatter, it’s still not available. Having heard about release dates ranging from ‘Christmas 2008’ to ‘sometime in 2009’ we decided to get the official word from publisher Alten8 – who also happen to be handling the coding duties, too.

We’ve been told that Eternity’s Child is DEFINTELY still being worked on. The horrendous delay is due to Alten8 having to totally re-code the game in order to avoid the same pitfalls that seemed to blight the PC rele...

  • News Capcom: No Street Fighter II HD or Bionic Commando Rearmed for WiiWare

Christian Svensson - Capcom’s Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development, for those of you that don’t know - has recently explained exactly why the company is failing to port games like Bionic Commando Rearmed and Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to WiiWare – the file size restrictions are too harsh and the technology isn’t powerful enough.

Speaking about BCR, he said: It would never fit in the Wiiware filesize so it would have to be disc based and you’d basically have to redo everything for Wii. It would not be an inexpensive process and I’m not sure the r...
