InkyPen, the Nintendo Switch app which serves as an ever-growing comic book service, has just received a brand new update which takes it to Version 1.2.0. It's added several community-requested features and fixes, including the ability to read comics in vertical mode.
The vertical mode is naturally designed for those who like to read comics in portable mode, but you can also use it when the system's docked. Imagine a TATE mode shmup using a rotated TV or monitor, but you're reading a comic instead. Neat.
Here's everything you'll find in the update:
Patch notes for update 1.2.0:
Features
- Massive speedup of application responsiveness in many use cases.
- Better handling of networking for faster browsing.
- Added support for reading comics in portrait mode. The user can now choose to rotate the comics 90 degrees on screen, in both handheld and docked.
- Updated content is now marked with a 'New' badge.
- ZL and ZR can now also be used to navigate when reading comics, doing the opposite of the L and R counterpart for one handed reading with the right Joy Con.
- You can now download a comic series from the series view.
- Multiple device sync support is now here.
- Long series titles in thumbnails now scroll to display the full name.
- Long series descriptions in thumbnails scroll to display the full description.
- Searches are maintained after switching between views.
Fixes
- InkyPen introduction video delay on startup is fixed.
- Users that have an expired or non valid subscription can now browse and read the same way non-logged-in users can.
- Dropdown now correctly scrolls to the currently active element when opened.
- Signup / login button in the menu bar now navigates correctly when using shoulder buttons in anonymous browsing.
- Fixed an issue where the scroll position would jump between pages.
- Verified quality of Brownie recipe in terms of service.
If you haven't heard about this one before, InkyPen is a free-to-download app available from the Switch eShop and has a variety of different comics to read, some of which can be viewed for free. You can get properly stuck in with a $7.99 / £5.99 monthly subscription to see everything it has to offer.

@DreamerDC Marvel and DC have gone to drain. Meanwhile you can read Mask omnibus on InkyPen for free.
TATE mode is very good!
I wasn't even aware it existed, I may have to look at it.
if they can put this on switch, they should also add youtube and netflix.
@Moistnado They have youtube on the switch
Can you load your own comics too ?
I got masses of pdf files and cbr files from Humble Bundle and those official git corp comic dvd's.
@DreamerDC
Not too mention that most have massive massive libraries, you can get stuck in and lost in for years to come .
@LetsGoSwitch oh wow, didn't actually notice. better news than inkypen.
Not trying to talk crap on any of the other fantastic comic publishers available, but Image would be the only one to really get me to jump into another monthly subscription service.
The comic shop I had been going to for years closed down due to some very tragic circumstances about a year ago, and I haven't bought any physical comics since. I never got to finish Paper Girls, Gideon Falls, or a few other series on my pull list. (Luckily Saga went on haitus before this happened)
Marvel Unlimited subscriptions aren't too bad at $65/annual, but I was mainly reading for X-Men, which is going through a big transitional phase right now, so it was a good place to jump off for the time being.

Any Image comics there?
@DreamerDC Oh ye of small minded American market. There’s a world of comics out there that wouldn’t even notice if DC or Marvel went belly up.
I forget this existed, to be honest.
Do they have Japanese Manga on the service at all? Or is it just western comics?
@DreamerDC
The massive MASSIVE amount of comics in the UK and Europe are hardly indie though.
And there is more to European comics then just Asterix, Lucky Luke or Tintin.
@SmaggTheSmug
And now I am curious what you would recommend.
@KitsuneNight InkyPen has the Mask Omnibus and TMNT in the free section and Usagi Yojimbo and Hellboy behind paywall. That's some series I already know to be excellent. Swords of Glass is in the free section, but I read the first volume in physical form and wasn't impressed... But I am very dissatisfied with European comics for some reason, Asterix being the only thing I enjoyed.
And since we are in the gaming community, Little Nightmares has a comic on the app apparently.
@DreamerDC
It's a shame cause a lot of them are pretty good.
But if you have a passing interest in European comics Cinebooks does a decent effort of translating them in English and releasing them.
To me it's kind of surreal to read some of their titles in English.
@SmaggTheSmug
Dark horse mask or toyline mask ?
And i was actually hoping for your recommendation in European comics, generally speaking.
I am from Europe so I have acces to them.
