UK chart data is now in (a little later than usual) for the week ending 9th March, revealing that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has managed to drift, boost, and presumably red shell its way back to third place.
Capcom's Devil May Cry 5 takes the honours this week, with Anthem being knocked off top spot and actually dropping all the way down to fourth place. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's rise, which sees it leap no less than five places, arrives despite sales actually being 4% lower this week than last. This week was a little slower in terms of sales all around.
Elsewhere, The Lego Movie 2 Videogame managed to stay in the top ten in its second week, but Trials Rising has been knocked out and down to 27th.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart (physical sales only):
1. (New) Devil May Cry 5
2. (5) Red Dead Redemption 2
3. (8) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
4. (1) Anthem
5. (2) FIFA 19
6. (3) Far Cry: New Dawn
7. (4) The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame
8. (9) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
9. (7) Metro Exodus
10. (11) Grand Theft Auto V
Did you buy any of these chart-topping games this week? Any surprises this time around? Let us know down below.

Said it before and I will say it again, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a beast!
Edit: MK8D is actually second on the individual formats chart. Beast!
Oh look GTAV is back, I wonder what crazy results it would get if it was ported to Switch.
Not only did Mario Kart 8 went back up. Smash Bros. Ultimate went back up as well. from Number 9 to Number 8.
@Grumblevolcano
It seems a no brainer at this point.
@SBandy if Mario kart 8 deluxe is a beast, what is GTA 5?
Don't even have half those games but I wonder what the actual unit sales are
I’m ready for Mario Kart 9.
I’m ready for mario kart 9 aswell
I’m ready for a large dlc pack in 8 deluxe.
@1UP_MARIO @justin233 Unfortunately, with MK8DX selling as well as it does, I don't think Nintendo is in a rush to push out a new one. This is why I'm looking forward to Team Sonic Racing, and Crash Team racing. Even if they're overall only decent, they still scratch that similar itch.
That being said, I'd gladly welcome DLC for MK8. A few new tracks would do wonders.
@Regpuppy totally agree. No chance of a new Mario Kart anytime soon with the sales it still has. Most we could hope for is DLC, which would be nice. Think CTR will be very good and am looking forward to it. Sonic team didn’t trailer great but hope I’m wrong
@Mr_Pepperami @Regpuppy I know it’s definetely not coming but I can dream.
DLC is never gonna happen aswell. It’s already called Mario kart 8 DELUXE the definetive edition with all previously released dlc tracks from the Wii u.
@Mr_Pepperami My only problem with TSR is that it definitely seems like the weaker of the two. But when the only other kart racers out there are mostly shovelware, as long as it's at least of decent quality, I'll probably get it.
@Grumblevolcano Rockstar could probably buy a island/country at this point....
@1UP_MARIO Pokken Tournament DX has DLC (DX = deluxe), so the name of the game means nothing about DLC potential.
@Mgene15 The King of Beasts?
@Grumblevolcano gta V would do well on switch, but not crazy sales numbers. the Nintendo crowd generally doesn’t get excited for games like that like Xbox and PlayStation fans do. A big batch of the Nintendo audience is family, don’t see a lot of family’s getting that for there children.
@Grumblevolcano wow. Your absolutely right. I totally forgot that was on the switch too.
@Grumblevolcano but then again the pokken tournament DX came with everything from the Wii u version and all new DLC as in season pass for the switch and Mario kart 8 Deluxe came already with previous DLC from the Wii u and exclusive new battle maps for the switch.
I really can’t see DLC ever happening for Mario kart 8 deluxe. Would love it but really can’t see it. I wish I was wrong
@1UP_MARIO The base Switch game got all the Wii U content, the Arcade exclusive content (that probably would've been Wii U DLC if the Wii U lasted longer, Wii U post-launch support for all games except Splatoon was pretty much over by early 2016) and some Switch exclusive extras. Then you got 2 DLC packs in 2018.
So it's not much different from MK8 Deluxe getting DLC. Do I think it'll get some DLC? Not sure but I think it'll connect to Mario Kart Tour whatever that ends up being.
@Grumblevolcano I see mario kart 8 deluxe as Hyrule Warriors DE they both came with their Wii u dlc plus some extra skins and players
I'm very much expecting MK8 and Odyssey DLC to be announced sometime this Summer. There's that mystery Kalamari Desert tweet from way back combined with Birdo, Diddy Kong, and Funky Kong all being missing. And then there's Delfino Isle on an early Odyssey world map.
Also, I'm now imagining Dante on the Cavaliere in a Mario Kart race.
@AlternateButtons What do Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7 have to do with each other? Those games were on entirely different systems, one a dedicated home console and the other a portable system. It's not the same as having two on the same system, directly competing.
I mean, I won't say it's impossible. But Nintendo tends not to release more than one new Mario Kart on a console, regardless of the console's lifespan. The only thing that has me scratching my head is how exceptional the situation is with the Wii U and MK8/MK8dx. But with its current sales, I just don't see them releasing a new one any time soon.
And this is why I was just saying Nintendo isn't likely to release MK9 on the Switch. MK8DX remains an evergreen title. However I do think there is a reasonable chance of a significant DLC for the title, adding almost an entire new game's worth of content.
How come gtaV still have people to sell to?!
@Heavyarms55 I actually believe we will get Mario Kart 9 on the Switch
But 8 is selling to well to release 9 soon
Pretty underwhelming DMCV sales TBH. It sold 1/3rd of what DMC4 sold at retail. Granted, digital sales are a thing now, but even assuming an extremely generous 50% digital attach ratio, the game is still selling 33% less than its direct predecessor.
In fact, both Metro Exodus and Far Cry New Dawn had bigger launches. So did Anthem.
Let's not even mention Resident Evil 2 or Kingdom Hearts 3...
Mario Kart 8 DX continued to be a beast. It sold ~5000 copies last week, which was more than the launch sales of the Xbox One version of DMCV.
@Regpuppy I think we will see the next entry of Mario Kart next year. Most of Nintendo's heavy hitting franchises have already seen releases or will see a release this year. So they will need their biggest franchise, Mario Kart, next year to push sales amongst new franchises, resurrected franchises, and possibly some sequels to franchises that saw releases early in the Switch's life.
@Tantani I seriously doubt it. MK7 remained selling well on 3DS all the way till the end of the 3DS and only declined alongside the decline in 3DS sales. That trend is pretty consistent among Mario Kart entries. So I seriously doubt we will see MK8DX be any different. I know some Wii U owners are still bitter about that detail, but we have to face it, those of us who bought a Wii U are an extreme minority among gamers.
But a major DLC for MK8DX on Switch? Alongside a price drop on the base game? Very likely. And future releases will probably come packaged with that DLC.
@Heavyarms55
True
But we will see
I mean, a new Mario kart 9 will put the world on fire
Think about the idea of them releasing a pro vr kit (i still hope that we will get a real vr kit and not just the Labo vr, and many believe it will happen) along with a Switch pro and a MK9 with VR compatibility
It will instantly become the best selling vr kit in the world!
But we will see
I wonder if mario kart 8 deluxe will actually be able to surpass mk Wii
@Tantani I mean, if they could somehow, against almost all evaluations, get VR working and working well on Switch, Mario Kart VR might well be THE killer app that pushes even skeptics like myself over the edge. MK Wii sold around 37 million according to Wikipedia. Last I saw there were around 33 million Switches in the wild to date. If sales stay consistent and at the end of 6 years there are about 100 million Switch in the wild... I could see MK8DX surpassing MK Wii. Especially if we get a big DLC pack on Switch.
But that's a lot of "ifs".
Great to see Devil May cry 5 at #1... Loving the game and another hit for Capcom in PC land 😎
https://www.pcgamer.com/devil-may-cry-5-is-capcoms-second-biggest-pc-launch-ever/
RE Engine is a beaut. Maxed @60FPS and my GPU goes into energy conservation mode at 1/3 the core speed!. (I need to OC it to get Anthem there, and at 70c!)
This is how you optimize an engine for PC. Hopefully someday they put this much care into a version for a Switch game 🙄. It needs such little resources to run.
@roboshort I'm willing to entertain the idea of a new Mario Kart on Switch, at some point. But next year, while MK8DX is still hitting top 10 sales lists? I highly doubt it, not that early. Not when they can throw out a DLC with 2 cups, and some new characters, achieving about the same effect.
As I said before, Nintendo has been VERY consistent with how they handle Mario Kart. They release one on a system, and let it soak up sales for the lifetime of that console. They have never, up to this point, released two Mario Karts on a console.
@Heavyarms55 well, they will make VR works on switch, only time will tell how well (no pun intended)
On a switch pro with better resolution (1080-1440p) it will be amazing
And think that things like the next 3D Zelda and Mario and even maybe games like Pokémon snap and even mainline Pokémon games at some point will have it (a gamer can dream 😍)
@Tantani I wouldn't say no to a Switch pro, but VR isn't even on my list of "wants" for what that would entail. Though I wouldn't mind it being there, what is more important to me would be a larger handheld screen (ditch that wasted space on the edges) and that screen supporting 1080p, Bluetooth headphone support, more battery life, and either more internal storage, or a second microSD card slot.
If we got all that, then VR would be a nice bonus.
@Regpuppy If they release one for the Switch it will be mid-next year for the reasons you stated pertaining to Nintendo’s trends. Otherwise I think Mario Kart 8DX will probably be it for the Switch. This year and next year will likely be the peak years for the Switch. Nintendo’s going to need the big software to stimulate growth.
@Grumblevolcano GTA V would get 12 articles on NL explaining how to fit 50GB on the Switch. Spoiler alert: you can't without at least a 64Gb Micro SD
@roboshort Sure, Nintendo will always need big software. But that doesn't mean it's going to be a new Mario Kart. If anything, it'll be a focus on new ips, sequels, spinoffs, and reviving old ips. At this point it's less about huge hits and more about filling out their catalogue with exclusives and big multi-plats. Mario Kart isn't the only card Nintendo has to play here.
Also, the trends I mentioned put it at one per system, not any sort of deadline. Even if we look at the Wii, which lasted awhile, it got Mario Kart Wii 2 years in and coasted on that for the remaining 4 years of the console's life. Likely because it remained a top seller for it throughout that period.
@Regpuppy Well. I suppose we will find out at some point before too long. If we see Mario Kart it will probably be for the reasons I mentioned and if we don't, it will be for the reasons you mentioned.
"Also, the trends I mentioned put it at one per system, not any sort of deadline. "
Actually, what you mentioned does imply that. Nintendo will release iterations of Mario Kart relatively early on so they will be able to coast off of it for several years.
@roboshort Honestly speaking, I hope I'm wrong. Because I'd welcome a new MK, with new mechanics, characters, and maps. (Chain Chomp, pls) But I just don't see it in the cards, unfortunately. I guess my pessimism, and skepticism, is there to protect me from dissappointment. I'm kind of glad of that, after that Grinch Leak. Lol
