The 'New' branch of the Super Mario brand has garnered quite the reputation for being easier than its older counterparts, and that reputation continues to hold true for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe on the Switch. Not only did the Wii U original bear the stigma, but this ported version offers even more in the way of leniency when it comes to difficulty.
But for hardcore, death-defying platform seekers all is not quite yet lost. Casually hanging around on the main menu is a few other ways to play that seem to have been overlooked by many, including some of the staff here at NL Towers. We never said we were perfect.
The most inviting are the challenges, which are suitably a series of challenges that test your platforming mettle in ways even New Super Luigi U can only dream of. They may not seem too overwhelming at first, but stick with them and you'll realise just what kind of a world of hurt you're in for. Check out the video above if you're interested to see more about the words you've just read/skimmed.

This game was ©2018, I think Nintendo meant to release it last year, but didn't.
Pre-ordered tgrough amazon! Its coming in on launch!
Yeah the challenge mode gets downright brutal after awhile. It’s just hard to take this seriously, how difficult could just making a new one have been?
Caught this video on Youtube last night. I do love Alex's videos, but this one does inadvertently kind of prove that even the game's Special levels are pretty easy!
Regardless, I never played it on Wii U so I'm in!
ok multiplayer with the kids during daytime then infuriating challenge mode at night when they sleep (so I can swear n punch the sofa if I have to)
I'll get Tropical Freeze instead.
Great game if you haven’t played it BUT I’d say get Donkey Kong country tropical freeze instead.
It has deluxe on the title which isn’t deserved really. Easy mode and content removed. Twirl is mapped to the same button as jump and better use of hd rumble.
I’d still say if you only have a switch console it’s worth a purchase
whispers I found the original WiiU game levels reasonably hard. Got frustrated by the need to repeat levels I had completed when I failed a later one... I think perhaps I'm just bad at these games...
@Retupmocnin You have to register copyright in order to use ©. So it was registered in 2018, not this year.
They’d better add Funky Kong
@Painay haha that's my plan as well!
Amazon shipped mine this morning, can't wait for Friday, been way too long since I played a new 2d Mario!
It's not super-easy if you don't play as Nabbit and are trying to get all three of the star coins in all of the levels. It may feel a little easier/familiar to those of us who have been playing 2D Mario games for over 30 years, but it is definitely a great game for those who didn't play it on Wii-U. Plus you are getting the Super Luigi DLC with this which is a nice little challenge.
@GamingTelescope hah! tropical freeze is even harder, good luck with that lol
@Discipledoctor yeah i have to admit i remember rage quitting on the challenges, they are quite tough, i stopped playing after a while and then sold the game, this time i'm going to give it a second chance and see how it goes.
@frabbit just a word of warning, never ever fall for that, just because someone that you watch makes it look easy doesn't mean that it is lol but it's your choice after all, good luck.
I'm mixed on this one. I was disappointed how the main game felt so similar to NSMBW. Also, it didn't seem as fun to play multiplayer as the designs seem less interested in making it work that way. (Fortunately, Super Mario 3D World does this much better)
However, I did like the challenges and there are a couple places where the game surprised me. Oh, and I never played the Luigi side, plus I think the family would have a lot of fun with the new silly characters.
In the end, I'll just wait, because backlog is large, and we even have new games we've barely played. (Starlink and Splatoon 2 are getting the most play right now even though we have all the latest Nintendo games - Mario Party, Let's Go, and Smash)
New Super Mario Bros for the Wii and Wii U were legitimately tough games to play on your own because of them being designed so you could play them coop. The fact that the levels had to be designed to fit 4 players made them a bit compromised for single player, it's part of the reason why I always thought the DS/3DS NSMB games were better.
Didn’t declare ‘victory’ until I had beaten New Mario, New Luigi AND every last challenge. Whoo! Man was I in for a surprise on the middle and latter! Still not as hard, collectively, as Trop Freeze (beating and earning the bonus world/levels, that is). Also, how tough was completing every mission in both NES Remixes?! Let’s talk about that..!
