My original Wii seems to download at speeds over twice as fast as Wii U, so how in the world does internet speed play a role in that?

The Wii probably has a smaller bandwidth that it requires less connection and speed to get optimum results. I don't know everyone's internet situation. All I know is what I see first hand with my connection and how I would deal with a problem. For example, you could say you have a fast internet, but not change the settings or do anything to fix it and continue to blame it on Nintendo.

Wii U internet is superfast, especially considering my lame 10M connection.
Downloaded Assassin's Creed III (18 Gigabyte) in 5 hours (including installation and update).
In fact I downloaded it 2 times because my first external harddrive wasn't 100% compatible with Wii U, but still each time it was completed within 5 hours.
ZombiU (5GB) took around 2 hrs max. I downloaded both games when they were on sale, so I don't think it has something to do with servers.
I guess some people have an internet setup that's not compatible with Wii U. Or maybe it's just a North American only problem.

Well, I'm guessing you live in UK. The OP creator is from UK. I'm in U.S., but I doesn't matter because we use the same cable for data transfer. People just need to make sure they have their internet setup correctly, updated, and optimized before coming online and complaining about servers that work well.
This complaint is literally nonsense. I understand it's a 'problem', but it's one that easily fixed. I don't care if your internet works for your iPad or PS3. It's a different console than those, and if you want it to work right, go fix it your internet and quit complaining about the servers.

Yeah that's what I'm going to have to do, although it's not really going to be a solution because the download has failed before with an 108-0068. I also got that with Just Dance 4 which I'm downloading since yesterday. Nintendo support says that error means the server is busy and that they're relaying my comment about improving their server infrastructure to the technical teams.

It's just going to get worse as more people want to use it to get software. I mean you have this great Ubisoft sale, but how many people are going to want to take two days to download? And why is Just Dance 4 15GB? The second one was on one DVD!

Hmmm I used to get error code 105 and think it has a similar fix to 108 http://howtofixstuff.blogspot.ca/2013/09/how-to-fix-wii-u-err...
