Just make the game like Metroid Prime and have the gamepad display a 3D-scan-like view of your surroundings in a wide field of view. That way you can either scan objects typically or just tap and hold a point of interest on the touchscreen to get information.
Miiverse could get interesting here by having your friends appear as random entry logs in stray computers.
