I bought Paper Mario 64 Through the Wii Mode on the Wii U. I have a 55Inch HDTV. I put the TV into 4:3 mode and everything especially the text is very pixelated or blocky. I just wondered what it was like back when it originally released on the N64 and was played on a CRT monitor? I bought Super Mario 64 the new one released in Wii U mode. That game I did play on the N64 and I don't find much pixelation sure the text is bad but the graphics are clear
where the blockyness shows up is in the top bar which shows your Health your FP your Stars and your coins. all those things are made up of squares. even the logos when you first start the game. are blocky. the text during the beginning video is terrible but i have no idea how it was back on the n64
I have the sequel Paper Mario Thousand year Door. I haven't checked to see how it looks. being on the gamecube which was way more powerful then N64 I expect it to look better. Other gamecube games look fine. such as Legend of zelda the wind waker and mario power tennis
For some reason, VC games are displayed with less vibrant colors when using component in HDTV than when you use composite on a CRT. Also, they are not stretched for 16:9 like they do on Kirby's 20th Anniversary Collection. You'll have better results if you have a different TV settings for VC than regular Wii games and switching to 4:3. If you use component, they'll be in 480p, except for Neo Geo which switch to 480i. Composite on HDTV will look awful and laggy.
On the other hand, playing on a CRT is almost as if you had the real machine, except for the Sega systems (you won't get the "jailbar" effect) and the N64 (you won't get the blurry antialiasing). In those particular cases, it's actually better.
By the way, I also keep a CRT next to my HDTV to play my old systems, I also connect my Wii occasionally. Playing composite or RF output games is almost a torture on an HDTV
