Does anyone know, if the original gameboy could play the color games? I always assumed that it could not.

Some of them couldn't, can't think of any examples at the moment. Wasn't Crystal Color only?

I remember the Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages games were color only. Based on that information, the Gameboy color, would have to be considered a successor to the original.

What about the Game Boy Pocket?

It's functionally equivalent to an original Game Boy. Like comparing the original DS to the DS Lite.

Very true. The only differences I know of between the Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket are these:
-Game Boy Pocket had a black and white screen opposed to pea green.
-The Game Boy Pocket used two AAA batteries as opposed to 4 AA batteries

And I don't know if this ends the debate but....

It was an upgrade like DSi and New 3DS, or even the S models of iPhones. It can do a bit more, and possible some things a bit better, but it was definitely a stop gap. There were some pretty cool GBC games that GB absolutely couldn't do. Some of the GBC games were borderline SNES quality, if you ask me.

New 3DS is probably the best upgrade they've ever done, though, IMO, because now it does internet, NFC, graphics faster downloads, and 3D better. GBC didn't do internet at all, DSi was mainly little DLC games. There's just more tech out now then there was then, and they improved on it top of that. It is still an upgrade, never the less.

Colour was a big thing. (Far more important than say 3D).

Well, but that's ignoring that it's a line of progress. If anything, depth perception is still more important than color, but the graphics weren't even that far either. It's a combination of things, really. Kind of like how Virtual Boy was 3D, but red and black and lacked polygons, for the most part.

Definitely, the Game Boy Color is an awesome machine. Although, It was followed immediately by the Game Boy Advance, I definitely love it. It's the first color Game Boy handheld and it definitely delivers. Crisp active matrix screen, backwards compatible, faster specs, smaller size - it has a lot of great features. It's definitely a worthy and great successor to the Game Boy.
