I missed out on the Game Boy Classic when I was a kid because I got the Game Gear instead. I was fortunate, because I was introduced to Sega and didn't have the colorless grey brick that is the Game Boy. Of course, I missed out on all its classics, but I've since made up for that. I did, however, have the original Pokemon games (although I was unaware that they weren't Game Boy Color games).

Yeah, when the Gameboy came out, it's main competitors were the Sega Game Gear, the NEC TurboExpress, and the Atari Lynx.
Despite being technically superior, they all failed to gain traction versus the Gameboy because of their battery life. Even the Sega Nomad sold poorly versus the Gameboy and it was a full-fledged portable Genesis!
I don't remember seeing any kid in my neighborhood or at school with a Nomad or Lynx. I saw one person with a TurboExpress (back when Bonk was popular). I saw someone using a GameGear with a TV Tuner once and someone playing Sonic. That's about it. Seemed like every kid worth anything had a Gameboy. heh
Those were the days. Donkey Kong Land was an amazing game. I played that game every weekend for about 2 years as a kid. Must of beaten it 100+ times. Link's Awakening was another amazing game.
Sounds like we had the same experience StarFox. I got a Game Gear when I was a kid and got a GBC when I was in middle school. I have a few GBC games, but I honestly didn't really play them that much (except Pokemon), since I was too busy playing my N64 at the time. Mostly just played pokemon. I hated playing games on a non-backlit screen. If they don't release a VC on the DSi or the DS2 I'll probably eventually pick up a GBA SP to play some older games on.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
My first Game Boy was also the Color. However, all I had was Pokemon, Link's Awakening, and Yugioh. I loved my Game Gear dearly, and even had the potato-sized battery-pack. I was sad when it pretty much died.

My sister had the Game Boy, I had the Game Boy Pocket.
I later bought the Game Boy Advance SP, which is my favorite Game Boy so far. After that I got the DS, which I screwed up even further while attempting to repair it. No I've got the DS Lite.
I had a GB as a kid. The only time I played Game Gear was in store displays. Also, I remember a time when the Perkins restaurant chain loaned GB and GG systems to kids to play while waiting for their food. Would believe the batteries would frequently die on me when playing the GG? But I suppose there might have a been a few customers that weren't appreciative of the room being filled with the Sonic 2 Underground Zone music.
