So, I don’t have one yet, but I know I’ll be getting one this Christmas from a relative of mine. So of course I’m currently in the obsessive investigative phase of getting a new toy.

They sell them in Capcom and Taito editions (they come with arcade games preloaded), and it’s basically like a Game Boy Pocket that plays Evercade cartridges, and that just sounds so neat. I’ve never really considered buying any Evercade cartridges before, but now I’m wondering if anyone has any must have recommendations.

Anyone here has one already? Or the other Evercades?

@Eel
The machine looks cute.
Is that machine have its cartridge or the games has been installed inside?

Eel

@Anti-Matter They do come with what looks like a cartridge, but it’s just to cover the cartridge slot, it doesn’t actually have the games. The built-in games are in the machine itself.

You can remove the fake cartridge and use a real one from the Evercade library to play even more games.

@Eel I've haven't got one, but have been looking at getting either one of the Super Pocket variants or the Evercade EXP - just can't justify it at the moment with the backlog as big as it is!

I guess it depends on what you're into in terms of what to recommend. I'd personally have no interest in most of the console variants as I personally have no nostalgia for 8 & 16 bit consoles. The Home Computer carts (like C64) and some of the Arcade stuff much more up my street.

There's a guide to all the released carts over on Time Extension:

@dmcc0 the one that comes with the Farming Simulator demake is very tempting. Though I suppose that would be more of a novelty than an actual game.

For now I’ve ordered Namco Museum Collection 2 as my first cartridge.

It’s funny, their other handheld consoles never really caught my attention- but this Super Pocket one is just right up my alley. I do have a backlog on my switch, but I can see this little device being more of a travel friend than a serious gaming console for me.

@Eel Yeah, they're ideal for that. Small enough to put in a pocket (unlike the Switch), and not too expensive that you won't want to take it out of the house (Analogue Pocket). Probably why I'm leaning towards getting one of these as opposed to the Evercade EXP as it looks like its a similar size to the Switch.

Do you know if you're getting the Capcom or Taito variant? I'll probably end up getting the Taito one purely because I have pretty much all the Capcom games on multiple other platforms already via Arcade Stadium 1 & 2.

@dmcc0 actually the only reason I know I’ll get one is because they asked me which one I preferred. Went with Taito.

Because Puzzle Bobble.

I only found out last night that there was not only one, but TWO physical Duke Nukem cartridges, PLUS Advance, PLUS remasters of the 2D games!!!!! And the 5th generation games re-released for... the first time? (I could be mistaken on this one as I don't follow Steam)

I'm also spewing that I missed out on the awesome Atomic edition of the home console variant of the Evercade......... (which went up for pre-order something like 6 months ago and sold out in a day)

How the hell did this competely elude me for so long?! I am the freaking audience for this!!!!!

I immediately bought the Taito Super Pocket because the colours were nicer, both Dukes (obvs), and I also grabbed Gremlins Collection 1 mainly for Zool (of which I had played the demo nearly 30 years ago).

Definitely not an impulse purchase that I was expecting, but they pushed all of my buttons, and the price was right on the Super Pocket.

I'll likely spring for the premium models eventually as the Super Pocket understandably comes with some performance/display caveats, but I've also longed for a true pocket-sized console that I can just throw in my bag for those situations where I might otherwise not be inclined to take my Switch with me.

Until last night, I had zero interest in the Evercade library.

I might also grab one of the Arcade collections that has the arcade versions of Double Dragon II and III in physical form (in the absence of a Switch release, as I already own no less than THREE physical copies of the NES trilogy...), but the collection, annoyingly, omits the first game.

I'm also not terribly keen on double-dipping on any retro games that I already own on Switch, but at least I can keep my options open between the two platforms now, and Evercade's cartridge prices are more than fair given the cost of equivalent releases on Switch.

@Sisilly_G hah I am also considering one of the duke nukem cartridges. Not sure which one would be better for me though. I assume the one with the 3D games.

Haven’t had a lot of time to play with mine, but I already did several of the puzzles levels in Pac-attack. I like the system-wide saving system for the games, it helps.

@Eel : The first collection is better by a wide margin as you get the first three games, and DN3D is widely regarded as the best in the series.

The second collection has two PS1 games which weren't exactly well-received even back in the day, but Duke Nukem Advance is excellent (it's basically a port of Duke Nukem 3D but with entirely new levels). This collection is appealing to my inner collector mostly given the relative obscurity of the games (plus I never got a chance to play them growing up).

I'm just disappointed that the GBC game wasn't also included, but I don't know where a third collection can even go from here as there's virtually nothing else left (apart from the super obscure mobile games).

I got the Goodboy Galaxy+Witch n’ Wiz cartridge, and I was so into Goodboy Galaxy that I played it non-stop until I noticed the battery was on ! (Almost empty)

So I went and connected the cable to continue playing. But instead of letting me continue playing, the system just… turned off.

And there goes my progress. It’s not a lot of progress to be fair (I had a save to continue off from), but now I know that the system shuts down to charge when it goes critically low battery.

So there’s the lesson: if you’re almost out of battery, create a save state or exit the game correctly (for games with native saves) before charging.

On the brighter side of things, the cartridge came with a sheet of stickers and a little poster. I love that. Both games are great too, I totally recommend this cartridge.

@Eel I backed Goodboy Galaxy on Kickstarter and I'm still waiting on the Physical GBA version to arrive - 1st Press Games are doing the physical unfortunately, so doubt I'll see it any time soon - the Switch version will probably be released by then! From what I've heard it's a really good game though, and backers did receive the ROM to play on emulators etc, but I think I'll wait for the physical.

Mine finally arrived a couple of weeks ago. My Capcom Super Pocket and Evercade EXP are still yet to be shipped by Amazon.

I've really enjoyed playing the original Duke Nukem all over again. Not sure why they changed the graphics on the soda cans as they weren't based on any real-world brand to begin with. It also seems a bit... excessive to go to these lengths to produce a remaster exclusively for the Evercade, and I expect that the Duke Nukem collections will come to PC and hopefully consoles too at some point (though I'll skip them on Switch unless there's a physical release).

My biggest gripe with the Super Pocket is the ridiculously loud (and tinny) opening screen audio. I'm always pressing the volume down button whenever I boot up the thing because you could hear the damn thing from space.

@Sisilly_G I’m now used to covering the speaker with my thumb when I turn it on. But yes it’s too loud.

I complained about it to their support (and also about a few mistranslations and text errors in the menus), and they said a patch it’s coming that will solve several issues (though they didn’t say which ones specifically), so perhaps with some luck they’ll change that.

Ah so you went the full mile huh. Out of curiosity, what made you get both the Capcom super pocket and the EXP? I think they come with the same built in games, no?

@dmcc0 I kinda wish I had known about it when it was being backed. But well you’re in for a treat, it’s a great game. Full of character and little details.

I bought the Taito Super Pocket first, then the EXP, and finally went all in with the Capcom Super Pocket. So far, I have only received the Taito Super Pocket.

You've just made me realise that perhaps I had a blonde moment when ordering the Capcom Super Pocket, but I didn't take the built-in games into consideration when ordering the EXP. I suppose it's not too late for me to cancel the Capcom Super Pocket order (which hasn't shipped yet), but I've also ordered official cases for all three systems from another seller, so I guess I'm stuck with it.

I bought the Super Pockets mainly so that I can always have a portable handheld device in my bag at all times, while the EXP will mostly be reserved for home use.

I already have most if not all of the Taito/Capcom games on Switch anyway, so the games didn't play too big a part in my decision to grab both. I preferred the Taito colours (and a few of the games), but Capcom probably has the stronger library overall, and I really liked the colours on that model too.

But speaking of Capcom, man, I would love to get the original Resident Evil on this thing. I've only played the first (the Deadly Silence version on DS) out of the originals, and I would like to be able to play RE2 and RE3 as well, assuming that the system can handle them.

@Sisilly_G I loved Deadly Silence, and getting the PS era Resident Evils on this little device would be a dream come true, to be honest!

I would absolutely buy all the classic Resident Evil titles even if they went greedy and sold them individually…

I really wish Capcom remembered people still like to play those versions.

Somewhat unrelated, but another dream cartridge would be Shovel Knight Treasure Trove.

@Eel : I enjoyed Resident Evil so much more than I had anticipated. I'm usually not so good with old games that I hadn't grown up with, but I loved Resident Evil (completing it around 8 times), and my cousin in Turkey enjoyed it too when I was there back in 2008 (despite him not knowing the language), and I believe he may have beaten the game too (or was at least damn close to it).

And I absolutely would not complain if they sold the games individually. Just give 'em to me.

Phew beat the main story of Goodboy Galaxy. Took me close to 9 hours, but I’m still missing about 25% of the items and friends so there’s still stuff left to do in this file. The planets are so puzzling, it’s gonna take a bit more.

It was a lot of fun! Pretty difficult towards the end too. Before the final section of the game, there was an area that seemed to make the game slow down though, I wonder what’s up with that.

I also had the game crash on me once, first time I see a blue screen error message in a GBA game 😅
